graphic card driver malfunctionning

Dear All,

I have the following problem;
I have installed a graphic card AB551A on a rp 3440 server which is to be connected to a TFT7600 with a KVM switch.

I installed the driver (gvid) with the PHSS_34389 patch into the server with the appropriate configuration for the TFT7600 (i.e. in the XF86config file).

All seemed to work well.

The problem is that I cannot regenerate the kernel after loading any new driver or any new module into kernel and I get the following error:

Quote:

Cannot build a kernel using /usr/sbin/config. The standard output of the command is shown below:

Stop.
config: make did an exit(1)

The command exitted with exit code -71.

Unquote

I then managed to remove the graphic card drivers from the kernel using a certain procedure found on itrc.

All drivers required then could be added and kernel regenerated properly.

I then re-installed the gvid driver and restored all TFT7600 configuration accordingly.

This time everything seemed to function ok including addind and removing the drivers from the kernel regenerating a new kernel and also the I could see a display on the TFT7600 monitor.

But after I rebooted the server for another time the problems came for another time. I could not regenerate a new kernel after adding any driver to it and always exitting with the same above mentioned error.

I have then redone the same above described procedure. But this time I always get the above quoted error each time I put the gvid driver into the kernel.

Your prompt help in this matter is highly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance
Johnny

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

Not sure if this is related, but PHSS_34389 is already superseded by PHSS_34390 followed by PHSS_34391.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

Dear Torsten,

I have tried to remove all the drivers in addition to the PHSS_34389 patch, and then reinstalled only the PHSS_34389 patch without installing the graphic card drivers and I could manage to add and remove drivers to and from the kernel, and the kernel was regenerating without any error.

Please also note that the dynamic modules for the graphic card gvid_him_cons and gvid_info were after I have reput the driver into the kernel both indicating their state as selectable, whereas when I added the gvid driver into the kernel for the first (i.e. directly after the graphic card installation) gvid_info was indicating as loadable and gvid_him_cons was indicating as selecatble.

Awaiting for your further comments.

Thank you,

Johnny

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

If I take a quick look at the patch release notes I see "fail to regenerate the kernel" listed, but I don't like to read all notes - too many. Maybe it was fixed earlier.
Where did you get the driver? Maybe something wrong with this?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

Dear Torsten,

I have downloaded my patch from the ITRC patch database.

Please can you put me the link which mentions that the PHSS_34389 could do kernel regeneration failure?

Thanking you for your cooperation.

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

When I open the said link and browse the PHSS_34389 patch release notes, I can only see that the superseded patches( like PHSS_30504) could do an error of kernel regeneration, but not the PHSS_34389 patch.

Can you kindly clarify?

Thanks
Torsten.

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

I would install the lastest patch.

Did you check this?

"Other Dependencies:
This Xserver patch contains an interface change that requires PHSS_32957 (OpenGL Runtime patch) or a superseding OpenGL Runtime patch to be installed for OpenGL applications to run correctly.

The hp Fire GL-UX graphics adapter (A7789A) requires installation of PHKL_26833 or superseding graphics kernel patch either with or before installation of this Xserver patch."

I guess you already know this

Hope this helps!

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

Hello Tortsten,

Sorry to bothering you with my questions, but I am working on a live server and as you know shutting down a server or restarting a server could be very costy.
However to my knowing the analysis phase would fail if a dependency is not available.

Appreciate receiving your precious comments.

Thanks
Torsten.

Re: graphic card driver malfunctionning

If you run an interactive session, nothing happens to your system until you start install **after** the analysis phase.

If you get errors or warnings you should review the log and cancel the session - nothing will happen...

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
