I'm trying to boot a vPar from an ignite tape. The vPar has a DDS unit (dev/rmt/5mn) but the thing is when the vPar is booting it was unable to "see" such device within the EFI Shell and therefore it can't boot from there. So I decided to open a service call in HP and it was assigned to a CE-Assis who without regarding any information from me simply saids that what i was trying to do isn't supported. He saids that I first have to boot from DVD and then recover from the tape. I have (from swlist):
HP-UX version: HPUX11i-OE-Ent B.11.23.0712 HP-UX Enterprise Operating Environment Component
vPars version: T1335BC A.04.06 HP-UX Virtual Partitions for 11.23
Ignite version: IGNITE C.7.6.98 HP-UX Installation Utilities (Ignite-UX)
I think that with this configuration booting directly from an ignite tape id in deed supported, but I'm not sure.
So i want you to help me to know if this guy is right or not and then try to resolve my issue.
If more information is required just let me know.
Regards.

SolutionSince you cannot interact with EFI in vPars environment, you need to setup each vPar to be able to boot from tape.
(see vparmodify ... -a io:...:TAPE)
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP CE-ASSIS saids that booting from ignite tape isn't supported
Using make_tape_recovery within a vPars-environment on PA-RISC Servers
(vPars A.03.03, A.04.03)
...
# vparmodify -p winona2 -a io:1/0/14/0/0/4/0.5.0:TAPE
...
winona1# vparboot -p winona2 -B TAPE
Of course your server must have a minimum firmware version.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP CE-ASSIS saids that booting from ignite tape isn't supported
For PA-RISC servers, vPars supports tape drives beginning with vPars A.03.03 for HP-UX 11i
v1, vPars A.04.03 for HP-UX 11i v2, and vPars A.05.01 for HP-UX 11i v3. This includes recovery
of a virtual partition within a vPars environment and without using an Ignite-UX server as a
boot helper.
For HP Integrity servers, vPars supports tape drives beginning with vPars A.04.04 for HP-UX
11i v2, and vPars A.05.02 for HP-UX 11i v3, including recovery of a virtual partition within a
vPars environment and without using an Ignite-UX server as a boot helper.

I will e-mail the link to this page to the CE-Assis, I hope this clear his mind and then focuss our efforts to resolve the issue.

Re: HP CE-ASSIS saids that booting from ignite tape isn't supported
You cannot have EFI access while the vpmon is booted.
Did you configure the vPar to be able to boot from tape?
What exactly is your problem?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP CE-ASSIS saids that booting from ignite tape isn't supported
"vPar1 can├в t scan such device unless you unplug a disk device from the HBA to which the tape device is connected (there isn├в t a C7438A device)"
You have disks and tapes on the same bus?
If you unplug a specific disk, the tape can be accessed? Did you check for SCSI ID conflicts?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
