hp-ux upgrade fom 11.21 to 11.31 on vpars with oracle rac 10g running

Hi All,

I have two rx 7640 servers with two npar created. One npar is having three vpars on both server. I am using one vpar from each server to build Oracle RAC 10g. OS version is 11.23 and vpar provider version is 11.23.01.04.
and the shared luns are presented from xp24k storage to both server.

We are trying to upgrade hp-ux 11.23 to 11.31 with minimum down time.

Any help is appreciated.

Shalom,

Oracle does not support that.

Two ways to go:

1) Cold install, of 11.31, vpar software & configuration,Servicegaurd re installation of Oracle 10g, present luns with data, start the oracle database. This can be done fairly quickly with a good plan.

2) Upgrade-Ux. Again, Oracle does not support this, it fails as often as it succeeds.

Either way in a best case scenario you are looking at being down for the better part of a day.

Cold install of the OS is the way veteran system administrators would do this.

Since you are running serviceguard, you could take the approach of a rolling upgrade.

Move all packages to one system, run production there, and do the 11.31 install and everything in plan one at your leisure.

Build a new serviceguard cluster on one node and do a quick shutdown of the old cluster and start of the new.

Downtime in this scenario could be under five minutes. But it requires a great deal of careful planning.

There is no serviceguard ,only oracle clusterware.

Doesn't really matter.

You should be able to run all your applications/packages on one node of the oracle cluster while you upgrade and configure the new node.

Cut over, with a carefully laid out plan should take place in a few minutes. I'd leave a maintenance window of a couple of hours, if possible.

The whole point of clustering is to minimize downtime, even during a complex upgrade. Its not perfect its high availability.

Hi,

Client don't have an option of down time so they recomend like this that,

upgrade os on one node to 11.31 and keep the other node 11.23 and use 11.31 node and then upgrade the other node os and clone it.

I dont think it is possible in rac with oracle cluster ware is two nodes are in different version of hp-ux. not sure.

Anybody have any experiance like this ..

1)Taking backup of database.

2)Go for cold installation of os and rac.

3)Iimport data and start database.
