Sorry for the delayed response. I've assigned points to all who replied to my questions. Thanks to all!

We haven't done this migration yet but I'll further explore the tape option. (I will also have to involve the storage and backup teams.) We have oracle golden gate on the server so we'll most likely use that product to sync the databases info once the new database is populated.

dba's compressed files and sent a smaller sized backup across the network via scp
