new backup centralized solution

we were looking for a centralized backup solution. running netbackup 6.5 in 3 datacenters. we are now running the backups locally in different sites. what are the best libraries to use? what will the best mechanisms to make the backups faster? how do we migrate the catalog dbs?

Re: new backup centralized solution

Shalom,

Very broad question.

The best solution depends on a number of factors:

1) Network topology, latency and speed (band width). The network is often a bottleneck.
2) OS requirements.
3) Budget. This can be costly.

Netbackup is a pretty good solution, its reliable and I've been through a DR recovery of an entire data center with it.

Speed is always a big factor. Before anyone can recommend a fast solution, you might want to do some reseach and check what the limiting factor is now. If its how fast you can write a tape, then you can get faster tape drives. If its disk writes, than you can conigure a LUN on storage for faster writes.

The best mechanism for making things faster is knowing what limits the speed and targeting resources to deal with the issue. The migration mechanism will depend on what solution you itend to use.

Each backup vender has its own method of migration. Are you considering giving up netbackup? Its one of the best but can be difficult to administer.

Re: new backup centralized solution

we are currently using netbackup 5.1 at the client sites and we like to have netbackup 6.5 at the datacenter centralized solution. I was looking for all possible ways to make backups faster. Like better libraries, tape drives, writing to disk and then to tape, etc. Do you have any suggestions?

Re: new backup centralized solution

Shalom,

Tell us as much as you can about the current setup.

At my past job, we were a netbackup shop. All databases like oracle and such backed up to disk and then netbackup caught the backup to tape later.

The backups were done directly to the SAN using the fastest tape libraries HP could sell us at the time.
