God bless all of you , I have question and i need some help ,i'm linux engineer 1 year ago but my work here asked me that i have to start focus on hp-ux administration as we have a lot of projects based on hp-ux and actually we started and i started to read in the documentation of hp but i see that it isn't easy like linux and solaris as i have also little experience in solaris , but i liked sam but i see that i don't have a lot of resources in the internet in hp-ux like linux and so i'm facing a lot of problems and i need free hot-line support like linuxquestion forum in linux ,

Re: New to HP-UX
Well, it depends. I would say hp-ux is easier then linux for me ... ;-)
If you need manual and documentation resources, visit
http://docs.hp.com
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: New to HP-UX
And what type of hardware, networking, disks you have. What mix of OS versions (and OE) and architecture will you support?

Re: New to HP-UX
I work in both Linux and HP-UX often. The basic command set is almost identical to both. So commands like 'grep' and 'more' and 'vi' are interchangable. However, Linux is much stronger in the basic command set than HP-UX. So you might expect some powerful arguements, like highlighting, that you wont find in HP-UX.
Where the two differ drastically is in LVM and installation. HP-UX is much easier to understand when it comes to volume groups and file systems and logical volumes. Linux will use 'fdisk' and partitions and slices. Here is where you should spend a good deal of time investigating.
You can refer to this URL for comparing Linux and HP-UX commands. Its the 'Rosetta-Stone' for ALL UNIX O/S's.

Re: New to HP-UX
You could go along the following way:
1. General knowledge orientation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-UX
Comment: An overview of the HP-UX operating system, including:
- little bits of history
- an overview of the HP-UX versions
- their various and sometimes confusing naming conventions
- the important new features from release to release
- the various operating envoronments
- The latest news in this regard:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/10/hp_ux_11i_v3_update2/
2.HP-UX user guide (for unix beginners): http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90164/B2355-90164.html
"Using HP-UX: HP 9000 Computers"
Comment: A really old document (Sept 1997), but I cannot find such a basic starter document that is newer.
I believe it would be very easy to read and could help you get a feeling about how much you already know from your previous experience that is common between the UNIX derivates.
3. User guide on shells (for intermediate users):
http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90046/B2355-90046.html
Comment: Again an old docu (August 1992), but again a good starter, should be quick to read.
Includes important concepts:
- the different types of shells
- basic shell programming
- advances programming
- references
4. Having these basics, you could plunge into the technologies that interest you.
A collection of all documentation for the HP-UX 11i v3 Operating Environments:
http://docs.hp.com/en/hpux11iv3.html
A collection of all documentation for the HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environments:
http://docs.hp.com/en/hpux11iv2.html
A collection of all documentation for the HP-UX 11i v1 Operating Environments:
http://docs.hp.com/en/hpux11i.html
I hope this might help you.
Best regards,
Stefan
