Rp7420 Fiber channel switch install

I am relatively unfamiliar with adding this type of hardware. I am running a rp7420 HP-UX 11.11 and I am going to be adding a second BRC Brocade Silkworm 2800 16pt Fibre Chl switch. I am not quite clear on the procedure needed to install this device. Can all of the Yoda's out there provide me with some insight. Thanks in advance!

Re: Rp7420 Fiber channel switch install

I'm not sure about the "real" question.

Just connect a cable between the server and the switch.

If needed, adjust the zoning for server and attached storage device.

Do you want to extend an existing SAN by chance? In this case you need to know more about your existing SAN ...

Hope this helps!

Re: Rp7420 Fiber channel switch install

Adding the switch is easy as mentioned. But your storage system administrator will have to configure the switch, the paths, the zones, etc. to make it all work. Your HP-UX job is to run ioscan to see the additional paths and insf -e to add the device files. If you do not have any storage specialist, you'll need some professional consulting or take a class on Brocade switches plus a class on your disk storage array. There are dozens of questions to answer about how the new switch will be used and how the disk(s) will used.

Re: Rp7420 Fiber channel switch install

I should have rephrased a bit. I can physically attach the hardware without an issue. However, I have no storage system administrator and I will have to configure the switch, the paths, the zones, etc. to make it all work. There lies the issue.

Re: Rp7420 Fiber channel switch install

IMHO it is not possible to talk about all and everything here ... but in a first step you should telnet to the switch and do a

# switchshow

look for the WWN of your server

and

# zoneshow

to check if zoning is enabled.

Now you need to learn about zoning, I guess ...

Hope this helps!
