src error

dear friends

i face this problem in a fresh instalation of red hat 9 version of linux

during first boot i got this error

uncompressing linux
src error
system halted

can any body can tell about this error

That sounds very much like a corrupt read of the kernel from the disk. Either the kernel is corrupt on the disk, or the disk controllers are giving bad reads from the BIOS geometry.

Generally speaking, you're looking a re-installing the kernel, which means the entire thing. A rescume mode startup may be enough to get you going though.

In any case, what sort of system are you using, and why are you using RH9 and not something more recent?

.. on what hardware? If you say SATA, then there's most of the problem (at my guess).

This could be due to a bad install media (CD or DVD). Try to run media check or smply burn another disk and retry installation. Try not to use Red Hat 9. Red Hat does not produce security patches for it anymore. Better use RHEL or Fedora Core.
