VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

I downloaded the realVNC 4.1.3 depot from www.realvnc.com. Kept getting errors about finding libstdc++.sl. There are now .so files. Creating a symbolic link didn't help, just got errors about a bad magic number. After reviewing the threads I see were 4.1.2 is supposed to work on 11.23 and I was hoping would work on 11.31. I kept getting errors about:Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/lib/X11/rgb'--This lead to creating symbolic links to:ln -s /usr/bin/X11/rgb /usr/lib/X11/rgb
ln -s /etc/X11/rgb.txt /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt
ln -s /etc/X11/rgb.dir /usr/lib/X11/rgb.dir
ln -s /etc/X11/rgb.pag /usr/lib/X11/rgb.pag
Also notice an error about: error opening security policy file /usr/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy which lead to creating a link to: ln -s /etc/X11/SecurityPolicy /usr/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy

Finally got 4.1.2 vncserver to start w/o errors. Now when I use the vncviewer it opens starts an X windows session, but the front panel doesn't display. It start's a terminal session and I can run xclock, but the menu bar doesn't display cleanly. I couldn't find any errors in the vnc log. Has anyone gotten realvnc 4.1.3 and/or 4.1.2 tar/depot to work on HP-UX 11iv3 11.31 ia64? Or is there another free alternative? Until now I've had a lot of success with realVNC.

Have you installed CDE on your 11.31 system?

Hi David,

If you may use "x2vnc-1.7.2", But make sure that you have installed CDE, becasue CDE is not installed in default installation.

#swlist -l bundle |grep CDE

X2VNC can be downloaded from below site.

http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Networking/Misc/x2vnc-1.7.2/

I found CDE at the fileset level and not the bundle level, but it is installed.

Re: VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

Hi,

You will need to install the Base CDE sofware from the HPXU 11iv3 installation DVD.

Example
CDE-English B.11.31 English CDE Environment

CPL Product: CDE-English
Codeword Req.: No
Size: 186750161
Revision: B.11.31
Description: English CDE Environment

Re: VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

I found CDE-English and it has been installed. I'm still not seeing the front panel nor the menu bar options to close windows. I can start xclock, but I can't close it.

Are you talking about a title bar on xclock?
I typically never want to close it so I tell it to not have one. But I have button options to bring up a menu.
It is probably simpler to just kill the xclock PID.

Re: VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

I was just running xclock from the command line from a vnc client just as a test.

My biggest concern is the missing front panel. The one that has a clock, terminal, printer, and session buttons.

Re: VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

Did you modify ~/.vnc/xstartup file? If you're getting an xterm and nothing more, then you need to change the xstartup for vnc.

What happens if you run "/usr/dt/bin/Xsession" instead of xclock... do you now see what you were expecting?

Re: VNC on HP-UX 11.31 ia64 not working

David, where did you find the 4.1.2 tarball for HPUX? I've run into the same unsat symbol problem with version 4.1.3 and would like to try 4.1.2 if I'm able to find it.
