Re: add processors to K360
All licenses are based on number of processors. If you add processors, you'll end up owing them money.
For anything over 50 users you'll find the oracle license will cost more than the processors.
I understand K's aren't made any more. You might be able to save money on your hardware contract(if you have one) by transitioning to a newer box.
We cost justified three rp5450 boxes based on decreased expenses on the hardware contracts. They pay for themselves 40 months after we decommission our old D boxes.

Re: add processors to K360
Nope, that's about it I think.
They'll be auto-recognized at next boot - if they're OK & installed correctly. You can watch the POST & you should see them tested. If you miss it, just check the front LED console, it should look something like FX4X. The key being the 2nd digit - it's a CPU count. The 1st digit - X in the example - is load as in an uptime or w command.
Good Luck,
Jeff

Re: add processors to K360
If you are running Oracle, as he points out, if you can provide 2x the performance in the same number of CPUs, you save $80K list on Oracle "per CPU" licenses than you'd get upgrading from 2 CPUs to 4 CPUs (and 4 CPUs does not double your horsepower from a 2-CPU box, CPUs don't scale linearly... you get about 75% more juice than a 2-way box has). Believe me, that $80 will buy you something easily twice as fast, these days, over the K-class units.
Then, there's the trade-in value. Depending on the class of box you are upgrading to, you can get $10k to $20k for the old K=boxes.
The only reason to stick with the older boxes is if you are stuck with 10.20. If that is so, you'd better figure out an alternative, and fast: 10.20 is discontinued, and will hit 'end of support' in June of 2003. Sticking with a K-box so you can avoid the pain of getting off 10.20 is like waiting under a tree for a rain shower to end, figuring that, if it lasts long enough for the rain to start dripping through the tree, you'll just find another tree. The whole premise is invalid...
If you're interested in finding a newer server with 2x the performance of your old one, check out an attachment I placed in the following thread, which provides several old and new servers, with their TPC stats and SPEC figures:

SolutionThe processors you are plugging in should be of same speed as that of previous two (0 and 1).
Plug in the processors 2 and 3 and boot the machine. and watch console while m/c boots. If the m/c comes up it's fine otherwise you need to upgrade the firm ware version of the processor 0 and 1.
