copper to fibre converter

I have a client who has a new rp7410 in 2 partitions. They are attempting to connect one of the partitions to their fibre network via the built-in gigabit NIC(copper RJ-45). They are using a Unicom GEP-5000TF-C (copper to fibre converter) to accomplish this. Has anyone done this? They are unable to get to the network using this setup.

We have already checked the cables (copper and fibre) and the port on the switch as well as the NIC card. The card had worked when plugged into a 100Mbps hub, but obviously, they would like to get the gigbit speed. The lan settings on the server are auto-negotiate, and the switch is set to 1Gb.

They are unable to put a fibre HBA because there are no available I/O slots.
Any experiences/suggestions would be nice.

Re: copper to fibre converter

Hi Josh,

Instead of Auto-neg, set all switch / port setting to fixed 1Gig. Do the same on the server side too.

Hope this helps.

Re: copper to fibre converter

Tamil,
Thanks, but the link you gave was for HP-UX 11i v2 only. We run 11i v1

Sanjay,
We had tried this through SAM, but it wouldn't let us change the speed away from autonegotiate. We finally tried lanadmin to change it and it worked! Thanks!

Re: copper to fibre converter

Hi - Can you tell me how you changed the speed and changed it from Auto using landmin. Thanks

Re: copper to fibre converter

# man lanadmin
# lanscan
PPA number is just a number, i.e. lan0 = 0

# lanadmin -S {speed} {PPA number}
The speed setting is in bits/sec, so 100Mbps would be 100000000.
