HP 9000 I40: Installing HP-UX

On installing HP-UX on an HP 9000 800/I40, how does one go about booting from the CD-ROM drive? Is this even possible? The machine came to me with a CD-ROM drive and 4mm tape drive installed in the chassis but not hooked up to the SCSI chain, and all the hard drives removed. The CD-ROM and tape drive had been hooked up before, as I had seen the system in action, but how does one determine the "path" for a given device? "PATH" from console only shows which paths had been formerly configured as primary boot and alternate boot. Typing "BOOT" or allowing it to go through autoboot results in

Booting...
ENTRY_TEST status = 0

Failed to initialize
ENTRY_INIT status = -4

No boot device found.


Terminating selection process.
Boot from primary boot path (Y or N)?>

Hello,

From BCH, type "sea" to list the devices installed. Usually the CD-ROM drives are set in SCSI ID 2, and tape drives in 3. Harddisk in 6. Then type "bo p#", where # is the corresponding number next to the device shown you want to boot from.

Ok no sea command exists on Nova systems...

try "bo 56/52.2.0"

The path of the internal SE SCSI channel is 52 and default of the CD is 2 and DDS is 0. When the system ask you for path or command enter
52.2.0 for CD or 52.0.0 for DDS

It turns out that setting the TERM jumper on the CD-ROM drive results in the following:

Console> boot 52.2.0
Interact with IPL (Y or N)?> y

Booting...
Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 4

IPL Error: bad LIF magic.

It seems a hardware problem. Perhaps the core I/O.

Call HP to replace it.

Hello,

"Bad LIF magic" is when you are trying to boot from a non-bootable device, or when the bootable area is damaged.

Either the CD is not bootable, or the CD itself is damaged, or the CD-ROM is damaged, or both.

I'd bet money on it not being a bootable CD. The only bootable Cd's are those HP sends with the FOS.

BTW, you can use ODE, the Offline Diagnostic Environment, that is on your support CD to run MAPPER. This little gem will ping every SCSI address on every cable and tell you what is out there and it's full address. This gem can only be run before you boot HPUX.
