Installation VGA Card in an HP9000 series system


Recently we have purchased a VGA card with P/N:A6150B from HP which we will install it in an RP5470 server.The purpose is to install RP5470 on HP 10000 Series Rack with another 6 HP Proliant servers and having central control to all through one monitor+keyboard using a KVM Switch 0x1x16.I searched for specs on HP's site and, from all i found, i have some questions. This card (gives a VGA output and 2USB ports) is compatible with the KVM switch? What problems are most possibly to happen when twe will install this card?Can we install it ourselves or it's better to do it someone from HP?

The O/S of RP5470 is HP-UX 11.0.

The installation of the graphic card can be found at the url below :


Check the chapter 1, under sub-chapter "Installing Graphics". There are also some issues on Graphics Troubleshooting on this part. I found the most issue when installing the graphic card is CDE not come up.

Please remember to have the minimum requirement for this product (minimum requires HP-UX 11.00 Support Plus June 2000 or later, better you have the latest one).

I'm not sure the card compatible or not, but can try first. In my env, i used graphic emulator software ... it's more easier and can login from my PC (not from freezing data center).

You can try to install by yourself, and off-course HP can do it & they will let you relax while they doing it.

This is more complex than you might think. First, the rp5470 will not show anything on the graphics card until the system is booted and CDE is started. You will have to use the secure web console or a serial connection to manage the boot processes.
Second, the default setting on the graphics card is 1280x1024 and most of your KVM switches are only 1024x768. This cannot be done via "sam". There is a bug in setmon with the rp5470 that doesn't allow this to be set permanently, so I had an unsupported workaround that I will have to find for you if you want to proceed in doing this. You also have to stop X11/CDE to successfully run setmon, then restart it. Naturally, all of this has to be done via the console, either LAN or RS-232.
Third, you will need an A7782A PS/2 to USB converted assuming you have PS/2 cables from your PS/2 switch. The A7782A also helps with keycode mappings with are slighly different on a Windows keyboard typical of a TFT5600 or other HP Keyboard/Monitor.
It can be done, but it takes some work, isn't fully supported, and can't help you manage the boot processes, since the card activated until after boot and CDE loads.

2D PCI graphic card set- consists of one graphics card (H) A6150B and
one2 port USB card (H)
NOTE: The graphics card is restricted to a turbo slot only.
The USB card can use any slot

There is not official support for the KVM switch and flat panel display
but it works with the proper set up and patches or fix (depending on
what you have loaded for OS and patches). However, it cannot function as the boot
console, as the graphics card only runs under X11 and the OS must boot
to run that. You have to use a dumb terminal, laptop with null modem
cable, or network access via secure web console from a browser or telnet
session for the boot console for monitoring boot or interacting with the
boot process. It is not necessary to have a boot console attached for
the system to function. First after booting, you may have the
X-server/CDE startup indicating that it is unable to start, and
periodically that get reported to the console as /etc/inittab tries to
launch it every few minutes. I think stopping the X-server/CDE, short
of commenting it out of the /etc/inittab file, can be done with two
commands, "/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d", and then "/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig
-kill". The reason that the desktop startup fails is that the default
display resolution for the card is 1280x1024 and the flat panel monitor
display resolution is 1024x768. That is easily set using the "sam"
utility. Then you can restart the X-server and all is well,
"/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e", /sbin/init.d/dtlogin start". (Note, I think on 11.11 the path changed for I think this is dtlogin.rc)

1. Use the setmon utility to change the monitor type of the system.


NOTE: When doing this, note the index value selected and choose NOT to
save the changes to stable storage.

2. Create a /etc/rc.config.d/monitor file with the following
