internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

Hi,

I have rp3440 server came with factory installed HP UX 11i V1. internal two HDD is connected to internal SCSI controller. But now we want to install SA6402 controller and connect inter 2 HDD to one of he SA6402 channle and another for to connect MSA30.

I did cabling as per doc and followed the instructions on how to set boot device on SA6402. Once i boot with core OS and recovery CD and go to recovery shell cmmand there disks are not detected but external MSA30 disks are detected. I have tried only connecting internal disks but no luck and loadfile is failed saying no device file found.

Kindly help us on how to create RAID1 on intenal disks with SA6402 controller. SA6402 controller is installed in PCI slot 3 as recommended for internal disk mirror support.

Thanks and Regards,

Ashish

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

The lower 2 internal disks are connected to port A2 of the smart array controller.

Please try to load sautil together with saconfig and run it

sautil /dev/cissX

(X is a number)

What is the result?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

Hi,

according to

http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/support_matrices.html

the Raid cards are not supported for the internal disks of the rp3440.
Of course this does not mean that it is definitely not possible to use this configuration, but you might not get any support from HP if you run into problems later.
If you want to do the experiment:
I see no reason why the internal disks should not be recognized. Maybe you used the wrong internal cable (Disks A & B are on one cable, disk C is on another and on the same SCSI bus as the external port).

best regards

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

Hi Stefan!

Too many documents!

http://docs.hp.com/en/SM-20060504//en/SM-20060504/raidcombinedsupportmatrix_5_4_06.htm

says it is supported.

Even the "Internal Cabling Guide
for HP Smart Array Controllers" (Manufacturing Part Number: 5971-4280) has a chapter 4 named "4 Cabling for the HP 9000 rp3440 Server"

This chapter describes how to connect the cables of an HP Smart Array 6402 or 6404 controller card to the
internal hard drives of an HP 9000 rp3440 server.

Should work!

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

I've no idea about the support status of the SA6402 in the rp's. However, if they are supported, perhaps there is a minimum firmware version required and/or a requirement to have the right EFI driver(s) loaded?

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

Regarding the firmware, the minimum PDC is 44.24 for the server and 1.92 for the SA according to the link posted above.

You probably need to install patch PHSS_33086.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: internal disk mirroring with SA6402 controller

Thanks for your prompt reply. Problem got resolved after installing SA6402 card on slot3 and running all loadfile commands as per documentation of A9890A installation guide - section making A9890A as boot device.

Once again thanks for your support.
