K420 internal disk failed

Hi all
I have a K420 system with a failed internal disk. Do I have to shutdown the system to replace the internal disk?

I also have D class servers but their internal disk is hot swappable

Re: K420 internal disk failed

hi,

you'll need to power off the K420 to replace the internal disk. And you'll need some screwdrivers too, sorry no hotplugging here.

BTW not all D-class servers have hot swapable interen disks.

Re: K420 internal disk failed

Yes. You have to shutdown server.

then you have to open front panel to get access to disk drives.

Re: K420 internal disk failed

Yes, you'll have to shutdown the server. Once it says it'sx OK to turn off power, turn the key to the off position. Pull off the front plastic cover, and now you'll a set of Torx (not Allen) bits to remove the cage covers for the disk drives. The entire cage slides out but be careful as it can be fairly heavy. Be sure to match the jumpers between the old and new disk.

Re: K420 internal disk failed

Actually, none of the D class servers have hot-swappable discs. They have hot-pluggable discs.

Hot swap - just swap the mechs, no commands required.
Hot plug - some commands required, perhaps both before and after.

Bascially, hotplug means it is electrically safe, but not much more.
