Re: k420 - max cpu
the maximum is 4 for this system.
You can find more information here:
http://docs.hp.com/en/981/A2375-90012.pdf
(page 6)
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: k420 - max cpu
The '4' in 'K420' signifies the max. number of CPUs supported.

Re: k420 - max cpu
The K2x0 and K4x0 could both have up to 4 processors.
The K3x0 and K5x0 could each have up to 6 processors.
So the digit after the K does not necessarily represent the max number of processors.
Details on various models available here:

Re: k420 - max cpu
We had a K260, originally w/two CPUs, that became a K460 with the addition of two more CPUs.
Anyway, here's a better explanation of model numbers, according to http://www.openpa.net/systems/hawk.html:
* The first number after the "K", 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 indicates the general type:
o a K100 is a single-CPU system with limited expandability,
o a K2x0 takes up to four CPUs, has better expandability (more RAM) than a K100,
o a K3x0 takes up to six CPUs, has more I/O-slots than a K2x0,
o a K4x0 takes up to four CPUs, has more I/O-slots and supports partially more RAM than a K2x0,
o a K5x0 takes up to six CPUs, has a different I/O-configuration than a K3x0.
* The latter numbers [00, 10, ..., 80] indicate the "internal" features, like CPU and chipset.

Re: k420 - max cpu
I've no idea what 120 MHz PA-RISC CPUs for K420's go for these days, but it might be more cost effective to take that money and put it towards a newer system, perhaps even an rp3XXX which, with even just the one CPU would likely run rings around a four-CPU K420. Heck, you could probably achieve the same result with a used rp2XXX.
Of course *I* would prefer if you put the money into a new say rx1620 which would also run rings around a four CPU K420, and would _probably_ still do so running your applications under the Aries PA-RISC emulator.
