So I took out the 2x64MB RAM from one and put it into the other hoping to get a total of 256 MB. But alas, the system is reporting only 128 MB.
I tried several banks to put the extra memory in.
Any ideas ?

Sometimes the numbers are hard to see, but they are there.

Re: memory in 9000/d220
If you have had the door off to get to the memory, on the inside of the door is a picture of the CPU boards and the positions for the memory i.e 0a/b 1a/b etc.
cheers

Re: memory in 9000/d220
You need to be sure that all the memory being added is good.
