performance comparison

Hello all,
I want to estimate the performance gain between a hp9000 L2000 server with 440MHz CPU and a hp9000 rp5470 server with 750 MHz CPU.
Could you please help me?

Moreover, has anyone a comparison between AlphaServer 4100 5/600 and hp9000 L2000 server with 440MHz CPU?

Re: performance comparison

Andrea,

It's SO difficult to compare UNLIKE machines. Published benchmarks are great if your application is one of those benchmark programs. But because we deal with real world applications, and not benchmarking applications, it's very difficult to get the right answer. A dart board would suffice in most cases. If you were going to benchmark how "linux" runs on either, then you would have a very near legitimate test.

I'd suggest you call HP, seeing that they own both now anyways!

Re: performance comparison

Andrea,

Just to help a little, the L2000 is also known as the rp5450 and the rp5470 is also known as the L3000.

Here is a good site to determine some benchmarks between various rp54XX systems as well as some of the Alphas.

Re: performance comparison

On OUR app we get very good scaling between 1-8 cpus

so 750MHz is about 87.5% faster than 440MHz. The L & rp54xx are essentially the same "class" of machine.

The best place for this is www.tpc.org, It may not have exactly the servers ypu are after but should give you a good idea

Re: performance comparison

I think this link will provide interesting reading since it seems to be in line with

"...has anyone a comparison between AlphaServer 4100 5/600 and hp9000 L2000 server with 440MHz CPU?..."

(* First read this link by searching on HP or RP. After you've got some landmarks it'll be easier to parse. *)

Re: performance comparison

Check for the TPM rating of all the servers you mentioned and compare with that.

Re: performance comparison

Answers on a postcard..

Sybase EST TPM Numbers:

hp server rp5450 (440 MHz) L 1 7,723
hp server rp5450 (440 MHz) L 2 13,928
hp server rp5450 (440 MHz) L 4 22,422

hp server rp5470 (750MHz) L 1 14,200
hp server rp5470 (750MHz) L 2 27,500
hp server rp5470 (750MHz) L 4 50,000

WRT the Alpha Server 4100 I can;t see it listed - is it know as anything else?

Cheers

Jim
