rp5400 / grpahics / Setting up Network

rp5400 running 11i ver2. Installed graphics card / USB card. Set up the internal network parameters and everything is fine. Now I'm trying to connect to the internet. Obtained DNS address, set_parms addl_netwrk and punching in the DNS address and was able to start Netscape and connect to the internet. Problem started when the server rebooted. Runs through post on the terminal and then the monitor turn on with login screen. After login I receive the small blue box in the middle of the screen "The Desktop Messaging System Could Not Be Started". Logged in though terminal, removed DNS from hosts file and rebooted with same outcome. I can remove all network parameter and CDE runs fine.

Re: rp5400 / grpahics / Setting up Network

Hi,

without any logs I can only guess about the reason.

By default, if you set up DNS the server is trying DNS first - even for its own name.

If your server cannot resolve his own name in DNS, this will cause problems.

I would reconfigure the /etc/nsswitch.conf to search /etc/hosts first, then DNS.

Another thing to check is to run
/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: rp5400 / grpahics / Setting up Network

Torsten, First thanks for the reply. What logs do you need to see. I'm new at setting up the network side of this. The server has a fresh install and I can set up the hostname and ip address. If I stop there CDE works fine. If I do set_parms initial and at the DNS part all I have is the DNS ip. After I put that in and reboot CDE fails to start. I'll post the output of dr_dt.

Re: rp5400 / grpahics / Setting up Network

Try this (with your system name):

# hostname
myserver

now check the result with nslookup

# nslookup myserver

How about the result?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
