without any logs I can only guess about the reason.
By default, if you set up DNS the server is trying DNS first - even for its own name.
If your server cannot resolve his own name in DNS, this will cause problems.
I would reconfigure the /etc/nsswitch.conf to search /etc/hosts first, then DNS.
Another thing to check is to run
/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt
