As already mentioned, by Ninad, it can't be used for the purpose you want.
If you want to build a HA you should always invest, Lan Cards aren't that expensive.
You're on the save site with an extra Lan card per server.

As said earlier, the serial ports are designated for console access (console, remote = console via modem) and UPS. In former releases a serial heartbeat was possible, but I'm not sure if this is still supported. I guess it isn't. Anyway, even in this former releases a MUX card with additional serial ports was needed. IMHO it only makes sense to use the LAN for heartbeat because of reliability and availability.

Just to be complete:

tty0p0 = UPS

tty1p0 = console

tty1p2 = remote (modem)
