How to monitor protocols usages on L2 switch

Hi all,

I have a switch model 2810-48G and there is an up-stream Layer 3 router that provided the inter-vlan capability for the 2 VLANs that spawn across my switched environnment. The uplink to the router is a 100Mb Full-Duplex port.

We have 2 VLANs, one for DATA and the second for VOIP and there is a 802.1p value set on each VLANs to priorize VOIP over DATA.

I need to get a better visual on the protocols that are actualy traveling between the up-stream Layer 3 router and our Layer 2 switch. I tried a tcpdump with wireshark, that I fed into etherape.... but It`s clear as mud for me.

I also tried PCM version 3.0 but I could not find an option that showed the protocols and their usage.

My goal is to get a visual on what is actualy being in used and what protocol is sporadicaly getting spikes if any.

What would be the best way to achieve this?

Thanks taking the time to read my post.

Re: How to monitor protocols usages on L2 switch

I've been trying out various free/demo sFlow tools with my 2810s; they can provide quite a good picture of flows. The switch hardware takes random samples of packets and summarises them to the agent.
