[Video] - Deploying A High-Performance Private Cloud with HPE & VMware
From reduced operating costs to minimized downtime and increased agility for applications, the benefits of virtualised infrastructure is well documented. The evolution into Private Cloud technologies has only proved to enhance the business benefits as well as yield significant operational savings.
But how, exactly, do you deploy private cloud solutions?
With HPE, there are many options for deploying a high-performance virtualization infrastructure using VMware technologies. Each kind of deployment offers different advantages so you can deploy a solution that works for you.
Deploying with vSAN
VMware vSAN is a key pillar in VMware’s software defined offering within private cloud infrastructure, allowing you to take off-the-shelf server technologies and virtualize them into shared storage offerings for your VMware Private clouds. HPE’s offerings in the vSAN space are vSAN ready nodes – pre-defined and pre-sized configurations of compute & storage that are available in both the “DL” rackmount servers as well as in the Synergy frame solutions. There are a few benefits to deploying with these nodes.
With the DL offering, the rackmount vSAN ready nodes provide fast storage that you can allocate alongside the compute nodes in a hyper-converged deployment, in a scale-out 1u, 2u or 4u form factor.
With the Synergy platform, it’s possible to separately scale the compute and storage resources within the vSAN ready nodes for ultimate flexibility – something which isn’t possible in rackmount servers, as they are typically fixed.
Both HPE DL servers & the HPE Synergy platform feed into through the HPE OneView management API for site & global administration, as well as into the native VMware APIs & into VCenter. This means you can easily keep track of your infrastructure regardless of which site, location or datacenter you may be in.
Deploying with Virtual Volumes
Another option available to customers alongside vSAN is to harness the power of Storage Policy Based Management (aka SPBM) for enterprise and high-performing private cloud environments. SPBM as a technology was introduced by VMware in vSphere 6 as part of VMware Virtual Volumes (VVols for short), and allows for enterprise block or file storage to integrate natively for high performance workloads into a HCI-esque management experience. VVols enables per-VM management, deployment, backup/recovery & policy driven workflows using enterprise shared storage – historically not possible when using VMFS Datastores.
Not all VVol implementations are created equally in the market – and due to enhanced integration & custom workflows which make your lives easier on a daily basis, HPE Storage is the market leader globally for Virtual Volume based deployments on VMware.
Because the storage is located outside of the compute nodes, we can use very small server nodes with dense compute (something like a DL360 or DL365 for Intel and AMD CPU options, respectively), and scale the farm elastically without shared storage complications. The storage is elsewhere in a shared storage device, perhaps in the HPE Nimble Storage platform (the storage platform that forms the HPE Nimble dHCI offering) or 3PAR Primera.
Managing everything in Virtual Center
With both vSAN and Virtual Volume based Private Clouds there’s only one place to manage the entire platform: Virtual Center.
Here, you can use SBPM to manage the entire fabric of your environment and specify the exact policy of deployment that meets your business needs. For example, you can specify high, medium, or low performance.
By using Virtual Center, you can flexibly apply the solution that works for you. You don’t need to go all in with vSAN and you don’t have to go all in with shared storage. You can have the best of both worlds.
Now, you just need to choose the right platform for your workload. And, when you deploy virtual machines, they consume only the resources you need, which naturally saves money.
Also, you don’t have silos because it's easy to decide where virtual machines, applications, or even containers should live. Using vMotion, you can move everything around across all the infrastructure should you need to.
The SPBM framework and one-click policy driven experience is the same in both VVols and vSAN, making it the ideal platform for VM admins to manage general purpose or high performance profiles for enterprise virtual machines & containers.
Predict and prevent problems with HPE Infosight
So, you’ve set up the infrastructure you need, but how can you be sure it’s well-optimised?
HPE Infosight is HPE’s cloud based global intelligence engine. It uses AI and machine learning to predict and prevent problems before they arise across an infrastructure stack.
With Infosight, you can do full track analytics, recommendations and noisy neighbour triaging. This works for storage, compute, virtual machines and workloads that are happening end-to-end.
