FIRMWARE: Simplivity Support Pack vs Service Pack for Proliant - confusion.

Simplivity Interoperability Guide states:

  • HPE SimpliVity Platforms should only use the HPE SimpliVity Support Pack and not the standard HPE Support Pack.

Simplivity Upgrade Manager dialog shows:

referencing using the Support Pack for Proliant (which I assume = HPE Support Pack)

Which is it?

Can you not use the SVTSP ISO and its .SIG file in the same directory as UPGRADE MANAGER.?
And let it orchestrate it?

Or is the process.
If you want to upgrade the Omnistack FIRMWARE (using the SVTSP as qualified by the interop guide) on your OMNISTACK host you do it manually.

Confusion reigns. Someone make it clear. Thanks.

Re: FIRMWARE: Simplivity Support Pack vs Service Pack for Proliant - confusion.

Hi Stuart Green

You can use the HPE SimpliVity OmniStack Firmware Version SVTSP ISO and its .SIG file in the same directory as the SimpliVity Upgrade Manager. The Upgrade Manager will automatically detect the presence of the SVTSP ISO and its .SIG file and use them to orchestrate the firmware upgrade process.

However, it's important to note that the upgrade process may take some time, and you should make sure to follow the recommended guidelines for upgrading firmware on your specific SimpliVity platform. It's also recommended that you review the Release Notes and Installation Guide for the specific version of firmware that you are upgrading to in order to ensure a successful upgrade.

The manual upgrade process may be more complex and time-consuming, and it may require more technical expertise than using the Upgrade Manager. you may want to get in touch with HPE SimpliVity tech support for further assistance

Hope this helps.!!

Regards
Mahesh

Thanks for the clarity. For sure the dialog needs updated then.

When you say some time! >>>>
If I have 4 hosts and I was to do the latest Omnistack Firmware (SVTSP ISO = 1.2G) and the Omnistack Software (1.4G)

Are we talking 8 hours or more start to finish - upload and commit?. I read 2 hours avg per host somewhere.

Reason I ask is, I chose Upload only. And it had only got 41% of the upload in 3hours 41 minutes.
This takes a chunk out your day. Well ...not the watching but waiting.

What the heck is it doing?

Hi Stuart!

Good catch on the text in the dialog window.  It does need to be changed as UM won't recognize the Proliant Support Pack. It should say "use the HPE SimpliVity Support Pack (SVTSP)".  I have logged a ticket/issue so this will be updated in a future release.

Cheers!

If you are a bot then your information is out of date. And the recommended content as of today for anyone interested is the first to go here

Re: Query: FIRMWARE: Simplivity Support Pack vs Service Pack for Proliant - confusion.

So i proceeded with  upgrade-only.

It eventually took 8 hrs 20 mins.

I then run the upgrade and boom

First host in Upgrade Manager is in some stalled status toggling between Safely shutting down the Virtual Controller and Firmware upgrade pending

It is just hung at 43% for this host. I jumped onto the iLO of the server and its console shows

Starting initrd....
Copying root file system image to ramdisk, please wait....

Status is:
- Nothing is moving.... iLO Management Log shows no firmware has been update or payload uploaded.
- The Virtual Media console shows the SVTP ISO is mounted however.

Stuck in no mans land now.

Have a OVC shutdown and host shutdown and pending the ISO booting for firmware upgrades on the hardware.
Upgrade Manager says I can cancel but I shouldn't as could leave host unresponsive.

Any advice folks.

Can I just cancel upgrade manager or seek HPE Support.

No confidence in this stuff at all.
