PCI System Error

On an LC2000 we are receiving the following error on a novell box. PCI System error on Bus\Device\Function 0078h. When this occurs the server is dead. We must power off and restart. If anyone has a clue let me know.

Re: PCI System Error

hi
i don't know Novell, but a pci error usualy is caused by a card added in the server, try to look in the event log hardware throught the cd-navigator, and check if you have info about the bus and/or slot,
if you don't have any card on the pci bus, probably the problem is on the mother board.

Re: PCI System Error

I have the identical problem that has been occuring on my Novell 5.1 SP3 box. It started about 4 weeks ago. This weekend i just went through and updated all the BIOS, controller and hard disk firmwares hoping that it would fix the problem (suggested by HP). Unfortunately, I had the server crash again tonight. Finding an answer to this would be real sweet. Sooner or later my server will not come back up. Only thing left for me to try is take out the second NIC we put in it for redundancy and see how that works.

Re: PCI System Error

See the following HP web site:
http://netserver.hp.com/support/trouble/event_query/event_query2.asp
Look for Event Code # 01905: PCI System Error. Click on "View Advisory" for information on this error. It does indicate a defective PCI card.

Re: PCI System Error

We are having the same problem in our High School. We also have a Novell 5.1 server, service pack 3 and also have had several server lock ups on the LC2000R. The same error "PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0078h". My HP authorized warranty provider has updated all the patches and drivers. I am not convinced this is going to fix the problem. I think the motherboard needs to be replaced. They have assured me that if this doesn't work, they will replace it. Any thoughts?

Re: PCI System Error

What (if any) PCI cards are installed in the Netserver?
This error can be generated by older PCI cards which are not PCI 2.1 compliant. HP cards such as the Mylex controller would be an example.

Re: PCI System Error

I have replaced motherboard and the netraid controller. It is not hardware related.

Re: PCI System Error

Has the resolution to this issue been discovered? The PCI error in Novell points to the device on Bus 0 which on the LC2000 is PCI slots 1,2 ** I've seen this call as of 3/27/02 and the symptoms are all the same except the hex address is 0075H instead of 0078H. 3com nic in PCI slot 1 and NetRaid1si in slot 5. All bios, fw and drivers updated as of today. We are going to try moving the NIC to Bus 1 and slot 4 or 6. System board was already replaced. Running NW 5.1 sp3

Check out this reference.. http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22pci+system+error+on+bus%22&hl=en&selm=VA.00003e39.009388eb%40myrealbox.com&rnum=1

Re: PCI System Error

I have the same problem here. LC2000r, running Novell 5.1. It has twice stopped now with PCI system error bus/device/function 0078H

There is no device in the slot (10005). I do have an additional PCI net (TX) card running load balancing/fault tolerance. A netraid 3SI is used for the external raid array. Is this also the case with JAY?. It seems to be with CHRISTIAN.

The server software was originaly built on feb 17. errors occured 5 and 9 of April. System bios was flashed prior to the software build.

JAY/CHRISTIAN/BARBERA - is your problem solved?

Re: PCI System Error

Q: Are you running Mcafee Virus shield on the server, and when the server crashes are any super dat files being downloaded at the time of the crash. I have seen this problem before and disabling the viruscanner fixed the issue.

Re: PCI System Error

I've got the same problem on a HP NetServer LC2000, Netware 5.1 SP3. Server went down 2 times so far and did restart nicely, but I'm sure that in the future it will not restart. Does anyone have an answer already?? Error code was: PCI System Error on Bus\Device\Function 0078h. Hope to hear something soon!! Thanx...

Re: PCI System Error

The People at HP told me it was an issue with Novell SP3 (or greater) not working properly with the LC2000. They suggested that if possible i revert to Novell 5.1 SP2a. Luckily for myself I had the equipment to do this. Knock on wood, but so far so good I haven't had any issues with the LC2000 and Novell 5.1 SP2A.

Re: PCI System Error

The recommendation is to apply Netware Spk4. Can someone who is experiencing this error do this and let us know the results?
Thanks!

Re: PCI System Error

Hi,

I have had the same error /Bus/Device/Function 0078h on a LC2000, however I was running Netware 5.1 with SP3 and the error occurred after I applied SP4. I thought Arcserve 7.0 caused the problem because it was when Arcserve was loading that the error occurred. I reverted back to SP3 and patched Arcserve 7.0 with a recent released patch (see CA's site for details) and I haven't had the error again, but I'm still on SP3. My Box is factory default with a NET1SI raid card and a DAT24 on the internal controller.

Re: PCI System Error

We are also getting this exact error. We started getting this error running NW 5.0 sp6a.

We have since upgraded to NW 5.1 and are currently running sp4. We thought it may be ArcServe or McAfee so we've unloaded those modules. We are running Groupwise 5.5e. We had this error crash our server this morning.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: PCI System Error

We fixed the problem on our server by replacing the net card driver. Although the on board NIC is an HP TX you should not use the HPTX.LAN driver. Use the latest CE100B.LAN.

I am not sure if this was everyones problem, it seems to appear in differing circumstances but seems to be problem with processing interupts on the PCI bus -possibly!

Basically the fix is - latest drivers/software versions/patches all round - if it still does it you have probably missed one.

Re: PCI System Error

Well, we applied sp5 last night. Changed the driver over to the latest ce100b.lan as well as ensuring all other hardware was running at the latest drivers.

Our server crashed in the wee hours of the morning.

I think I am fast reaching the point of migrating to a new hardware base entirely.

Anything else I haven't tried yet?

Thanks

Re: PCI System Error

Tony,

This is a case where rolling back to an earlier SP is required. SP2a or SP1 does not cause the error.

Re: PCI System Error

We have 35 LC2000U3 with Nw5.1 SP4 and have none problems.
The Thing we do is make sure your hardware setting are oke. Don't use irq9 and 15. We give PCI slots dedicated irq's
Our config.
- Netraid irq10 slot 5
- TTRCC irq3 slot 1(disabled serial2)
- HPTX nic irq5 slot 4
- Onboard SCSI contrl irq11
- Embedded LAN irq 5
All the remaining slots disabled.

Good luke and please let me know if it solved any problems.

Re: PCI System Error

Ed Martens:

Did you experience the error BEFORE you changed you PCI configuration as stated?

The reason I am asking is, that if you haven't had it before, you might have never fix it...

Thanks

Re: PCI System Error

We also have the same problem on a HP LC2000. Only we got the problem after installing Groupwise Webaccess. Before that we had no problems. Could it be the the NOVONYX web server has anything to do with it??

The Config:
Novell SBS 5.1 sp4
groupwise 5.5 SP5
Webacces
Arcserve7
Inoculan 4.5

Re: PCI System Error

Does anyone know if Service Pack 5 or 6 for NW5.1 cause this issue to re-occur. I have been experiencing extremely high utilization lately and I would like to Update from SP2A.
