What is the right configuration for the server I want to buy ?

I have a serious problem here. We want to buy servers for our work place (an institute of higher educations), we understand our needs, but we do not know what is best for us, and what kind of servers (specific configurations) we should buy ?

Seriously I could not make this question any more broad and vague. There is more than just "a server" here, you have to tell us what your needs are, how many people, what OS, what you will use them for, what you can afford etc.
