Orinoco cards (made by Lucent or Proxim) have excellent Linux support. Generally, cards with Agere chipsets work well (e.g., Orinoco). Cards with Broadcom chipsets may have problems. Of course, it can be hard to find out which chipset a given manufacturer's card contains. That's why sticking to Orinoco is pretty safe.
