Recommended value of tcp_mss_max?

Recommended value of tcp_mss_max?

Right now I have this set to this. I understand the recommended value is MTU - 40.    My MTU is 1500 so is there is any reason I cannot set it to 1460? And why would someone set is as high as 65495?

 

# ndd -get /dev/tcp tcp_mss_max
65495
