Are there any free x-windows server products out there?

Are there any x-windows server products that are free? I know there are some but you have to
pay for them.

Re: Are there any free x-windows server products out there?

I prefer to use linux myself, but if you're looking for a free Windows package, try Cygwin:

xfree86.cygwin.com

Project Overview
Cygwin/XFree86 is a port of XFree86 to the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Cygwin/XFree86 runs on all recent consumer versions of Windows and all recent business versions of Windows; as of 2001-04-11, those versions are specifically Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.

Cygwin/XFree86 consists of an X Server, Xlib, and nearly all of the standard X clients, such as xterm, xhost, xdpyinfo, xclock, and xeyes. Cygwin/XFree86, as the name implies, uses the Cygwin project which provides a UNIX-like API to Xlib and X clients, thereby minimizing the amount of porting required.

Cygwin/XFree86 is licensed under an X style license; Cygwin is licensed under a modified GNU General Public License that specifically allows libcygwin1.a to be linked to programs that are licensed under an Open Source compliant license without such linking requiring that those Open Source programs be licensed under the GNU General Public License (see the Cygwin licensing page for more information). Source code and binaries for both projects are freely available.

Hello,

there is still CygWin's implementation of XFree:

...and it's free...

Re: Are there any free x-windows server products out there?

Here are a few low cost/no cost options:

http://www.microimages.com/mix/ X server, $25 for a single user license, multi-user licenses run from $20 - $22.50

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zander/ewan.html freeware, no vendor support, no longer being developed, seems to have a sizeable install base though.

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ - freeware, but no vendor support, does telnet, X, and ssh. I have a copy on my home PC, is not bad, has some customizable aspects to the emulation so it is better then the windows telnet in that regard.

http://xfree86.cygwin.com/ - freeware, a port of Xfree86, the defacto X standard for almost all Linux distro's; has the added advantage of supporting KDE (custom skins and sound!)

VNC is free, multi platform and works well : see : http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

Xnest .... needs an existing Xserver to be running.

Xvfb .... Xserver runs in memory (no physical device).
