boot steps

Hi again,

After I successfully boot from the cdrom, question increase :)

I will put them in points:

1- I have 5 CDs come with my server[HP 9000 L1000].
a- HP-UX 11.00 core OS [HP-UX Release 11.00]
b- HP-UX 11.0 Application Software june 2000 [4 cds]
c- HP-UX 11.0 Support Plus june 2000

I know I have to install OS from the first CD but what is the other CDs?

2- because I dont have display card and there is no terminal, i'm using my notebook serial connection. For that when I re-boot from the CD I found the terminal display is not clear [ascii !] So how I can make my terminal display working okay?

3- I have 2 Hard disk, how I can make them mirror from the installation, while i'm installing the OS, Can I ? If yes how? and If not how I can arrange my file systems sizes like root and /opt and /usr and what is your recommandation for creating my file system sizes when I'm using this server for HP Operation with Oracle Database.

Thanks.
Faisal

Re: boot steps

Hi,
I'll start answering 1. and 2.
1. The application CD's contain basic HP softwares/drivers that you might want / don't want to install. Examples :
B7609BA A.03.20 Event Monitoring Service
B3835DA C.01.08.2 HP Process Resource Manager
B7697BA C.01.08.2 HP PRM Software Libraries
B3929BA B.11.00 HP OnlineJFS (Advanced VxFS)
A5158A B.11.00.06 HP PCI/HSC Tachyon TL Fibre Channel

Note that some of these softwares require a keyword to install. I've attached a zipfile that contains the list of products from the June 2001 CD's (I don't have June 2000).

The support CD contains the basic patches (you will definitely want to install those) and Diagnostic tools. Within the CDcase should also be a booklet that explains how to install them.

2. I'm not sure this is going to work for a telnet connection ... but try
export TERM=vt100

3. ... I'm not sure ... so I'm not going to answer that one :-)

Hope this helps,

A life ? Cool ! Where can I download one of those from ?

Re: boot steps

Hi Faisal,

The CD's are like this,

OS Core & Instal --> To do a fresh install on the system, this cd is bootable

Support plus --> This cd has online diagnostics software and all the patches for that version of OS released till the date the CD's were released. The patches are of three categories, Hardware critical, general release and wuality pack.

Application CD's (set of 4 /4 / 6 cd's ) These cd's have the application softwares for this version os hp-ux. The latest release pack for 11.0 had 6 application CD's. These cd's have the controller drivers primarily on the 1st cd and softwares like mirror ux/ compilers / mcsg / glanceplus and all othere applications softwares on these cd's.

Hope this helps.

Re: boot steps

hi faisal

in order:
1)
on cd 1 you have the operating system
on apllications cd you have several hp software that you can install for evaluetion and buy after the licence, on it you have other software that you can't see if you don't buy it and receive the codeword
on support plus, you have the OS patchs that you must install in your server (if the installation doesn't install)

2) you have a serial connection (now user for your pc) where you can connect a terminal or pc. It isn't a graphic console, you can use for administering your server and stop.

3) you can mirror you disk, but you must have a mirror disk licence (and sotware installed).
Tell me if you have this and help you to configure a mirror.

Re: boot steps

To answer your questions ..
1- First you do cold install from the Core OS CD (this you know), typically you would want to select 64-bit CDE HP-UX Environment. After that you load your Applications from the Application CDs, depending on what applications you need and any additional purchased appilication (eg: OnlineJFS, C++ Compiler, etc). Next the Diagnostics (STM, EMS and Predicitve Support) which may be already in the Core OS earlier or Support Plus CDs, either way it does not matter where you get 'em. Finally the General Release patches from the Support Plus CD.
2- Can you elaborate more what is your problem here, screen not clear or garble display ? I would recommend connecting a dumb terminal for your purpose but like you said you don;t have one.
3- Install your OS on the disk of your choice first. Once everythiing is done, you do your mirror later. See this thread that I posted about root mirroring, the process ..

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x8ed10bce6f33d6118fff0090279cd0f9,00.html

For the logical volume sizes of /, /stand, /opt, /var, /usr, well there is no fixed value to recommend, it depends on your disk size. Typically you would only need to modify /opt, /var and /usr. Increase them according to your best judgement, /opt is where all the applications generally located, /var is where the log files are located and /usr kindda like /opt, some application will be installed here.

Re: boot steps

Hi Faisal,

Try baud 9600, 8 bits, no parity as the com port setting while using the laptop to connect to the console port on the system.

To configure the mirroring you should have purchased the license for Mirror Disk/UX. If you have you may have to generate the codeword that will unlock the product on the cdrom.

If you have the relevant information, you can generate or view the codeword using this link,

http://licensing.hp.com/index.slm

To find the procedure on how to do the mirroring, just do a search on the forum with root and mirror as the keywords and you will get a lot many suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Re: boot steps

Hi,

I Suppose you might be using the "hyperterminal" in your windows laptop to connect to the serial port.

Then ensure,
communication parameters for hyperterminal,
>Bits per second (9600)
>Data bits (8)
>parity(none)
>stop bits(1)
>flow control(Hardwar/None)

are set accrodingly.

Re: boot steps

These settings should be sufficient to get the terminal emulation working properly ..
1) VT100
2) Flow control - XON/XOFF
3) Speed - 9600
