Can't boot off external DVD

I'm trying upgrade my test HP server and when I boot into single user mode, and SEArch the DVD isn't there. The hdd are there though. I can boot into multiuser and mount the DVD and umount and do whatever I need to, but I can't do anything in single user mode. Is there something that I'm over looking.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

May by, the DVD is connected via controller which requires a special SW in order to work. Try to connect the DVD to a built-in SCSI.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

did you try to do search all at BCH? If not, try that and see if it shows all devices hooked to it and make sure that power turned on for DVD.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

the DVD is connected to an LVD controller.

I did an SEA, but didn't specify ALL, is there a difference

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

what type of HP-UX server is it? sometimes it helps you when you do search all instead of SEA only.

HP-UX L-class server. I'm going to give it a try in a few min. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

Unfortunately, that isn't going to work, because it doesn't offer the ALL command for SEA.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

sorry. I didn't know that you are using L class. Only new machines offer sea all options. When you do sea what output are you getting? Are you sure that DVD is hooked up and seated properly? Also you can try to power off and change connection to local SCSI port.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

The only devices that come up are the hard drives P0-P3, and I know the DVD works, because I can use it in multi-user. Is there any SW that would prevent the DVD from being recognized in single user or the ability to boot off the hardware path which is 0/1/1/0.1.0

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

May be firmware is not able to recognize it.

DVD also shows as random access media and it won't show as DVD media, are you sure that P0, P1, P2 and P3 devices are Hard disks? Check the actual Hardware path.

Re: Can't boot off external DVD

HP boxes are rather picky about what devices can be used as boot devices because the firmware may not recognize them. If this is an HP supplied DVD then look for and install the latest Hardware Enablement patches or the latest firmware for your L-box model. The HWe patches are supplied as part of your periodic patch bundle CD's.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
