Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
I have a directory called /dbsync on an HP-UX box which I map using Samba to several Windows servers. I can open files on all of the Windows boxes. That is until now. One one of the Windows boxes, I can still map the directory and do a directory listing but I can't open any of the files. I get the error "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.". I have been doing this fine for a few years until very recently.
Any ideas?

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Ian,
What version of CIFS (samba) ? What version of windows? Any errors or informative messages in /var/opt/samba/ log files?

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Shalom,
The prior posts information requests are important.
You may need to run net join on the system to join the windows domain.
Sometimes windows domain controllers kick systems out from the domain. Sometimes the password of the users involved expire.
The behavior you report is consistent with the servers domain status changing or password expiration on the windows side.

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
A swlist shows ...
contents CIFS-Client,r=A.01.09.01,a=HP-UX_B.11.11_32/64,v=HP
On Windows, it's Windows 2008 R2
in the cifs log file, I get ...
oplock_break failed for file 400/ACTIONS.SEQ400 (dev = 4001000c, inode = 182,.
[2011/07/04 06:33:43, 0] smbd/oplock.c:(843)
oplock_break: client failure in break - shutting down this smbd.

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Hi Steven,
Thanks for your comments.
One interesting thing is that I am able to access the files on another Windows server. That one, however, is running Windows 2003. I don;t have another Windows 2008 R2 box to test on. I am using the same domain user to access the files on noth 2003 and 2008.

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Did you perform any update patch for those servers?
seems like it's issue with network.
please try increase
oplock break wait time = (default value) --> smb.conf
or
oplocks = false
to higher value and see if there has any improvement
Thanks
BR

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Hi,
I set oplocks to false. Now I get no errors in the log files but I still cannot open files on a mapped drive.
A "dir" on the Windows box shows the file but a "type" of the file gives the error ...
The system cannot find the file specified.

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
Ian,
I would suggest upgrading to A.02.04.02 if possible. Much better chance of being compatible with 2008R2.

Re: Cannot open files on mapped Samba drive
The answer can be found here ...
I removed the patch and it now works fine
