DNS hosts file

I am running a primary dns server with 2 secondary dns servers on HP-UX.

How are the /etc/hosts tables on the secondary servers updated with the master dns hosts information?

Re: DNS hosts file

The /etc/hosts is not updated when DNS does its transfer.

Re: DNS hosts file

As said the /etc/hosts files are *not* updated. Only the /etc/named.data/db.* files are updated on the secondary servers.

Re: DNS hosts file

DNS server keeps its data in /etc/named.data directory, and it DOES NOT use /etc/hosts.

So there is no need for DNS for update /etc/hosts information on secondary servers!!

Re: DNS hosts file

/etc/hosts are not UPDATED...

Are you sure you aren't talking about NIS?

DNS updates the zone file on the Secondaries automagically...

Re: DNS hosts file

We extract our DNS every night into a flat file, remove the M$ Actless directory crap, add some special entries (localhost and such) and then push a new /etc/hosts file to every UX server (we do rotation of the hosts files just in case of corruption).

This allows us to continue in case of a major DNS failure.
