Ehternet card speed and duplex question

I have an HP L1000 with several ethernet cards. I would like to get 100 Full Duplex from the card.

It's plugged into a hub and is receiving 100 Half Duplex now.

SAM shows the card type as "Fast Ether". The speed of "100" and duplex of "Half" are greyed out in SAM such that they can't be changed.

Also, lanadmin's Desciption line shows the card as "Hewlett-Packard 10/100 Tx Half-Duplex TT=1500".

Is this a half duplex only card? I tried lanadmin -X 1 100FD and it errors complaining about wrong PPA, but lanadmin -x 1 produces the expected output.

How can I change the duplex of this card, if at all possible?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ehternet card speed and duplex question

First, run lanscan to determine the correct instance number for your card. Then run lanadmin -X 100FD # <===== the # is the instance number. Ultimately these changes should go in the correct config file in /ete/rc.config.d. The file name to be used depends on the driver for the card (determined from ioscan):
btlan hpbtlanconf
btlan0 hpeisabtconf
btlan1 hpbasetconf
btlan3 hpbase100conf
btlan4 hpgsc100conf
btlan5 hppci100conf
btlan6 hpsppci100conf

Re: Ehternet card speed and duplex question

One other possibility... you said that the card is plugged into a hub. Is it really a hub, or do you mean a switch? Very often, HUBs are only half-duplex capable, and the card can sense this, which may disable full-duplex as an option.

If you are plugged into a 100BT Switch, you might check ITS settings, and make sure it allows full-duplex connections. Most do by default, unless it is very old.

If you're really using a hub, try a full-duplex switch to see if this is causing the behavior you're seeing.

Re: Ehternet card speed and duplex question

Hi Also remember your link partner needs to support Full Duplex, hubs are generally half duplex / switches support both.

NIC Setting | Switch Setting | Link Configuration
----------------|-------------------|----------------------
| |
10HD | 10HD | 10HD
10FD | 10FD | 10FD
100HD | 100HD | 100HD
100FD | 100FD | 100FD
AUTO | AUTO | 100FD
AUTO | 10HD | 10HD
AUTO | 10FD | 10HD*
AUTO | 100HD | 100HD
AUTO | 100FD | 100HD*

Re: Ehternet card speed and duplex question

Should be:

lanadmin -x 1
-and-
lanadmin -X 100FD 1

You had :

lanadmin -X 1 100FD

Re: Ehternet card speed and duplex question

If the hub isn't full duplex, you're done.

You can use lanadmin -X 0 100FD as noted above.

Or /etc/rc.config.d/hpbtlanconf as also noted above.

If its not a hub and its really a switch, hardcode the switch to that speed.

Attaching an example of hpbtlanconf for reference.
