EMS resource instance

What is the way to create a resource instance to monitor?
I have /net/interfaces/lan/status/lan0, how can I create one like
/net/interfaces/lan/status/lan0:1 ?

Re: EMS resource instance

If lan0:1 stops its because lan0 stopped. Virtual interfaces provide more addresses, but I have yet to see a situation where lan0:1 was up and lan0 was down.

All or nothing.

So, i don't think the goal is valid.

My 2 cents.

Re: EMS resource instance

Something like I can use cmmodnet to remove the virtual interface lan0:1 and see the failover due to that, while my telnet session to the node won't be affected.

Re: EMS resource instance

Well.

If you look at neststat -an or netstat -rn you'll see the ip address of your telnet session is the main ip address for lan0

Try an experiment

telnet to the ip address assigned to lan0:1

Then ifconfig lan0 down

See if the telnet session hoses or stays up. I'm not sure, but I'm betting it stops.

Let me know. I'm here to learn as well.

Re: EMS resource instance

I understand that. Even though this is at test stage, it will work in any environment, since lan0:1 won't exist if lan0 failed. Besides, there is situation that lan0 is healthy, but lan0:1 disappears for some reason.

Re: EMS resource instance

Hi Jun,

The monconfig command is how you'd add the resource for monitoring.
And I've seen the situation you describe where the outside world can no longer see the :1 I/F.
I've always found this to be an ARP problem. So I'd suggest that:

A) Make sure you're current on the ARPA transport patches on this system
B) Make sure the routers/switches in the network are current on their IOS levels & firmware.

Check the ARP tables on the next hop router next time it happens.

Re: EMS resource instance

Seems monconfig is about monitor requests, not about the resource instance. I know there is a book about writing monitors. Before going that way, I'd like to check out if there are quick ways to implement, or opinions like custom made monitors.
There is still an immediate question:
resls /net/...
show the classes and instances, but monconfig, Show option doesn't show anything about the /net resource class. This EMS keep giving me mysterious impression.
