Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

I am attempting to upgrade (using update-ux) a C3000 workstation (FW 5.0) from 10.20 to 11i (June 2002 release)

Everything was going well until I received this error message:

* Building the kernel
NOTE: Building a new kernel based on template file "/stand/system"
Generating module: krm...
/usr/lbin/sw/bin/mkdir -p /stand/build
Compiling /stand/build/conf.c...

Stop.

NOTE: One or more errors encountered. Take appropriate corrective action
and re-run update-ux to complete the update.

======= Wed Mar 12 10:14:31 MST 2003 END update-ux

I don't have any idea where to begin correcting this file... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Hi Daniel,

The upgrade process from 10.20 to 11.0 was a real bear - so much so, that most people around here would recommend a cold install over an upgrade attempt. Even the few who managed it would hesitate to recommend it. I think the best thing you could do at this point would be to start a cold install.

Hi Daniel,

Now you've seen why no one around here would ever recommend the upgrade route.
It's nearly impossible to complete it w/o the type errors you're seeing.

If I were you, I'd restore back the 10.2 with your recovery tape - I *trust* you have one or better yet 2. Then save all critical info to another system, do a cold 11i install. Then pull back this system info & reapply it to the newly 11i system.

Good Luck,
Jeff

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Well, after this problem, I tried to run frestore from the network location I had backed up to. frestore core dumped.

Infact, most everything was core dumping. So I rebooted - of course, rebooting doesn't work at all. I've never seen so many core dumps in my life.

The backup file is on a network machine - it would be nice to restore, but I don't know how now. It isn't critical that I restore it.

Is a cold install possible without a bootable drive either? What now?

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Absolutely.
Cold installs are used to load brand new systems.
Just pick your boot drive at the initial screen, as well as a number of other parameters if you wish & let 'er rip.

For a cold install, you'll need to boot from the CD media. That should certainly still be bootable.

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Okay, that was a matter of reading the install guide. I am currently booting off the media.

When I am finished, how do I set up my system like I want? There is another system in the room configured exactly how I want, also running 11i. Could I just transfer over some configuration files? What config files should I transfer to make sure the system acts the same as the other (besides it's own IP/hostname, etc)

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Hi Dan,

I'm attaching a script that I use to copy all the configuration files that we use. Some are obviously specific to our environment but you can figure out the important system ones.

Re: Error upgrading 10.20 -> 11i

Okay. HPUX 11.11 is installed. After installing it, however, the cleanroom calls and says that one of their plotters isn't working. It turns out that this computer ran the plotter, and had to have HPUX 10.20 on it. In addition, its configuration was unique.

The person who knew all this is on long-term disability leave in the hospital.

I did back up the system, but not onto a tape- onto a network directory. I just need to know how to get that file back. I don't know how to mount directories from the other machines - I use
:/ in the mount command but it just sits there.

Ping just sits there too, and doesn't try to ping anybody.

Would an frecover restore my system to the same way that it was, if it was a full backup?
