extending pv on a san

We have a PV on a SAN that was 70GB and was extended to 75GB.

SAM recognizes the extra space on the total size of the drive, but I cannot determine how to extend the PV so that the VG uses the increased space.

Is this even possible?

Re: extending pv on a san

Do a pvdisplay on your physical volume (like below) and does the "Total PE" and "Free PE" (remember that a typical PE is 4mb) reflect your new disk size? If it does, then you might be able to get away with using vgextend on your volume group.

[root]pbctst: pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c1t15d0|more
--- Physical volumes ---
PV Name /dev/dsk/c1t15d0
VG Name /dev/vg00
PV Status available
Allocatable yes
VGDA 2
Cur LV 16
PE Size (Mbytes) 4
Total PE 4340
Free PE 0
Allocated PE 4340
Stale PE 0

Re: extending pv on a san

I'm not a SAN person, per se ... but....

When you set up the volume group you set these limits. If, when you set up the vg you didn't allow (-e option) for a larger disk, then the volume group can't see it. The logical next question is '..can I change or modify the vg to see the larger disk?' The answer is, to best of my understanding, no. You must set these values specifically at vg creation.

Just a thought,

Re: extending pv on a san

I really wonder if you can use the extended space on the PV. Your PV Display may not show it as 75GB as the extents have not been extended. Your diskinfo may show it 75 GB. There is no way I can think of having pvdisplay claiming the extra 5 GB. Usually when we increase the size of the LUNs, we need to recreate the PVs.
