garbage character in commnad prompt in hp-ux

Hi All
We are having the HP-UX work station which is directly connected to monitor and OS is HP-UX 10.x. We edited the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file in order to add secondary IP. Then rebooted the machine. But it doesn't load GUI, It comes to login prompt. But I am getting garbage letter in the command prompt when we are entering from keyboard.

Anybody can help me to resolve this?

Re: garbage character in commnad prompt in hp-ux

check your modifications again. I guess you did something wrong and that's why the GUI doesn't come up.

The "garbage" is likely normal due to the way the console acts as a terminal with the current settings. Check

# echo $TERM

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

VUE or CDE (whatever you have at "HP-UX
10.x") tends to expect some consistency
between the host name and IP address.

That'd be my guess, too, but, because we
can't see what you did, it's hard to say
what's wrong with it.

If we change some in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf or etc/hosts file, can it be harm to the CDE ?

Yes.

A forum search for something like
cde hostname
should find examples.

Yes - if there is something wrong (e.g. name resolution, server cannot connect to itself, ...) GUI cannot start.

Hope this helps!

Do we need to edit /etc/resovl.conf too?

I agree to Steven:

"we can't see what you did, it's hard to say

Check all the modifications you did.

Hope this helps!

Re: garbage character in commnad prompt in hp-ux

I check everything What i did. Seems to be ok.Anyway I will check it again. In case if there is an issue in whatever file in the system, can I get the GUI again if make it corrected?

Also I am bit worrying about the command prompt. If I see any error in a file, I can't edit the file in current command prompt.Do you have any idea why I am getting garbage while I typing command?
