Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

Hi,

I have ignited my C300 workstation running on hpux 11.x. Can I use this ignite copy to upgrade my B180L workstation from 10.20 to 11.x since both of them are 9000 series

I tried it once but after booting from the tape (ignite copy) it prompt me for an error something like no directory found.

thanks in advance

Joey,

Is this in regards to a make_recovery tape?
If so, where was the tape created?

Re: Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

I doubt the Ignite backup from C class workstation will work on B Class. Yes both are HP 9000 class. since they are of two different class, the architecture and other hardware things may change.
I would have been confident if both are of the same class. Even though they are of different class, you must be able to install the Ignite backup but during the system startup the systam may crash due to invalid kernel for the hardware.
By thw way at what stage you are getting the error and coupld you please post the exact error. Make sure you take the backup of your system before trying to install the OS from Ignite backup.

Re: Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

Ignite UX is not a tool to upgrade the OS, but to perform an OS installation.

It may be possible to use the tape (created with make_recovery on C300) to install the B180L. Since hardware is different, you have to enter the interactive mode of ignite quite after starting booting from tape. Ignite will ask you for entering the interactive mode, but proceeds, automatically, the batch mode if you do not enter the interactive mode.

A better way is to use the C300 as the IUX server and ignite the installation via network on the B180L.

Re: Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

You can overcome the hardware/driver differences between the C and B class workstations by comparing the drivers in the /stand/system file and on the C class before you make an ignite tape try to include any drivers which are on the B class but not on the C (and build a new kernel). This way, when you boot the B class off the ignite tape hopefully all the necessary drivers are already on the tape and you should be able to install it aok.

Re: Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

All of you are correct so I guess I have to do a manual upgrade on my B180L workstation manually.

Thanks a lot for taking some time responding to my email

Re: Hp-ux 11.x ignite installation

If you want to install different machines with Ignite, use make_sys_image to create your "golden image" instead of make_recovery.

I use it personnally to install B132, B180, C110, C200 (with the same source image) and it works with no problem !
