HP-UX Licensing

Hello,

I am wondering about how HP-UX Licensing works and is given to the customers. Say if someone purchase a new server from HP, would he gets free LTUs and OS, Application Media ? I know s/w support would to pay $$$ though. With new server, can one get other HP-UX OS version media which can used with the server , would the LTU is transferable to the HPUX OS versions on the new server?

How the licensing works if you buy a refurbished server from a reseller?

I have heard about Processor Core based licensing but don't know what it is.

All replies and guidance in this regard would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: HP-UX Licensing

When you buy a new box from HP, you get a license to use and media --- although the media may be a separately purchased item. Typically, a hardware order will include the OS media with an Applications CD. You can then load any non-codeword protected applications but other options (Mirror/UX, OnlineJFS, compilers, ...) must be paid for. You might elect to order an Operating Environment which includes a suite of these optional products.

When you purchase a box from an authorized reseller, you should receive an OS license transferal. There is a HP procedure and form for this transfer. Generally this means that you get the OS and that's it. If you want additional products, they are treated as a separate new purchase by the customer.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: HP-UX Licensing

The OS license comes with the server.

If you would purchase a remarketed server make sure the seller fills out the license transfer paperwork and sends to HP. Beware HP may reject depending on the shadiness of the reseller ( gray marketeer ). Now this would only apply if you were to want maintenance and/or updates.

Application media: Any purchasable products you must purchase. If you want updates and support you must pay for it.

Not sure about your "other HPUX OS" question.. If you want older or newer verions ? That would depend on the purchase made. New server with support gets you new versions. Legitimate remarketed equipment with support would also get you new versions.

If you bought an old remarketed server with old SW and no support then you are stuck with the old version of OS.

Re: HP-UX Licensing

Thank You Clay. I do appreciate your fast reply.

I was trying HP's online configurator tool on the other day and created a BOM. This BOM showed 4 processors LTU and media cost besides the hardware, wouldn't it be free ?

If one has a server can he just buy a OS media and LTU from HP or reseller?

Can one get media of other HPUX versions , say with new server rp4440 HPUX 11.11,11.23 and 11.31 from HP ?

Re: HP-UX Licensing

hi,

you have to pay per cpu for the licences with hpux, so if you want to buy the new server with 4 cpu's then you have to buy 4 lic with it.

if you bought a server with 2 cpus you would have to buy 2 lic for it. HP would bounce the order if you didnt order the licence. then if you bought 2 more cpus to make it 4, in reality you should have to buy another 2 licences. A good reseller would tell you this.

the media is a seperate item aswell. this has to be purchased if you want the apps cd's and core os media. you dont have to order this at the time of server purchase. you can order the server with OD1 option and HP will install hpux for you. it is as a standalone product and buy whatever version you like afterwards

but if you only bought lic for 11.i version 1 you are not legally entitled to install v2/3 for example.

if you buy a second hand server from a good VAR then they should provide you with the right lic you need or arrange for a transfer? they can buy a lic to put with a server for you.

Re: HP-UX Licensing

Several others told about the license being included with the system itself.
Keep in mind this is only true for HP9000 systems.
With Itanium/Integrity systems you will always have to buy the LTU for HP-UX.

Re: HP-UX Licensing

Hi rccmum,

my understanding now is that HPUX OS itself is based on OE, there is not calculated as processor core based licensing.

you can install HPUX OS on the new server without any issues.

But you need to choose what type of OE you prefer such as FOE, EOE, MCOE

Re: HP-UX Licensing

rccmum,

On the refurbishes/used/grey market servers you can get the software suites transfered as well. So if you happen to find a reseller that owns the server and the LTUs for HP-UX, Mirrordisk, Online JFS, Glance or any other software that you need, you can follow the HP transfer instructions and take ownership of the hardware and the software licenses. It cost $400 to execute the transfer but can be worth it. Below is the link, it takes some time and paperwork but it can be done.

Good luck,
