SolutionB) Just typing:
hpux
should boot the box fine. I would examine your boot strings carefully to make sure you have no mistakes in them. To check the boot string run the following from a root prompt:
lifcp /dev/dsk/cXtYdZ:AUTO -
replacing cXtYdZ with your primary boot disks id.

As per JRF: 'autoboot' and 'autosearch' can be set/reset via the 'setboot' command. 'autoboot' when "off" indicates that you want to be prompted to chose your boot path and possibly interract with the IPL. If 'autoboot' is "on" an unattended bootup occurs.
'autosearch' "on" causes a search to occur for all bootable devices. The list of devices is then presented for selection. 'autosearch' has meaning only when 'autoboot' is "off".
