Invalid shared memory size

Hi,

are using HP 9000 L2000 Server with HP UX 11.0 and MFGPRO is running on the same. All about 40 plus dbs were running simultaneously.Recently after 34/35 Dbs,if we go to up next DB getting the eerror as "Invalid shared memory size".We increased the size of shmmax from 67108864 to 100663296.But we still getting the same error.

Awaiting all of yours reply.

Re: Invalid shared memory size

Shalom,

How much memory does the system have? How much swap?

swapinfo -tam

Any setting of shmmax above 25% of memory, which hpux defines as ram plus swap will be ignored.

You need more memory as defined above. You can increase swap but this may impede performance. You probably need to install some more RAM.

Re: Invalid shared memory size

check vmstat informations. what it is saying.?

swap space and memory has to be configured corresponding to others. Get the memory size as,

sam -> performance monitor -> system properties -> Memory part.

Refer swapinfo -mat information more. It will give the tuning points. Post here too.

Re: Invalid shared memory size

Hello,

I found the followin in my notes (don't know where I have it copied from):

"If you increase it beyond 25% of memory, which HP-UX defines as ram plus swap, the setting will be ignored.

In spite of this situation Oracle 10G app server requires shmmax to be 100% of Ram, ignoring the OS"

May be, you may find more information on the website from oracle. May be, the solution depends on the oracleversion you are running.

Hope this helps

Re: Invalid shared memory size

You are absolutely right about oracle.

Right before I left the US I assisted on a 10g application install. I here its in production.

Its sort of an agreement to disagree.

The OS STILL ignores the settings, but the oracle installer gets the information it requires at install time.

Kind of silly.

You system WILL ignore shmmax settings higher then 25%. It really sounds to me like you need RAM to pacify this.

Good luck.

Dear SEP/Muthu,

pls find the memory details & swapinfo result from the said server.

Re: Invalid shared memory size

Just a few pointers:
our swapinfo returns 47%, pretty high really
and secondly did you check with
ipsc -a to see if memory segments from your
db are nicely lined up in your kernel parameters. Bit of puzzling to do ..

Re: Invalid shared memory size

Hi Vinod, I would say you can consider upgrading memory of the server. even if you increase swap, it would affect performance of the system.

Re: Invalid shared memory size

Hello Vinod,

if I calculate correctly, your shmmax is smaler than your compined RAM and SWAP.
You may try to increase shmmax to exactly the value of RAM+SWAP
