Is LVM dead?

Should we all learn the Borg, er, Veritas volume manager?

People are whispering that LVM is going away...

Re: Is LVM dead?

I've held off for a while on this, but I have to add my $0.02 worth:

Veritas has a ways to go before I'll buy into it. The other day we lost an entire directories file descriptors on a sun box running veritas, crippling our ldap server. Fortunately we have a backup server. I have never had that happen on HP or on a sun box without veritas.

From what I understand, IBM and their committment to linux, they plan on making their LVM opensource (and some other features as well).

So, is LVM dead? I'd have to say no, and it won't be for quite a while. Just look at the language cobol, its still around and kicking (yuk).

Re: Is LVM dead?

Hi,

Some months ago we were *advised* to load Veritas 3.1. We couldn't even get it to load, even had the so called experts at our site, but still it didn't load. Anyway.... I asked these people what advantage had it over the current LVM.... and the answer was, there is a GUI....

So in a nutshell unless there are some improvements and actual new things that this product has LVM will be around for a while.... As Patrick has so rightly said about Cobol!
The last product that HP pulled off there roster (that I know of) was OmniBack 2.50

My 3 cents worth
