lanadmin speed settings

Hi All,

I have a question.
We are using a D class server as a Cell server and its running Data Protector 4.1 version.Upon checking the lan card settings I got the following information.

root > lanadmin -x 0
Current Speed = 100 Half-Duplex Auto-Negotiation-ON

Is 100 Half-Duplex setting okay for running backups and is it recommended. Please let me know.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Raja.B

Re: lanadmin speed settings

If the other end of the connection is capable (and it probably is), you would want to run full duplex. Also, never let either end of the connection auto-negotiate. The 10/100 drivers did not handle this very well and the standard recommendation is to force both ends to 100FD.

Re: lanadmin speed settings

It would be better to be Full Duplex.

But check with your Network Admin - make sure the port is Full Duplex.

Re: lanadmin speed settings

I would also recommand to set auto negotiation off and setting the 100FD at both ends.

Re: lanadmin speed settings

Some old 100BT LAN cards can only run HD. Can you tell us the model number of the lan card or the ioscan output for it.

Re: lanadmin speed settings

Hi

The network will work better with Full duplex setting. After discussing with your network team you can change to full duplex.

Re: lanadmin speed settings

You need to identify the card. If it's an EISA card then 100HD is the maximum; if it's an HSC card then you can run 100FD. 100FD is the preferred setting but I strongly suggest that you hard-set the speed/duplex settings on both the server and the corresponding switch port. There is a fundamental ambiguity in the 100MB Auto-negotiate protocol that can result in speed/duplex mismatches and it depends upon cable length (30-40m). Hard-setting these values avoids this possible problem.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
