LUN Concept

Hi all, could you please help me to understand the concept of lun?

what is a lun for? why to use it? what benefits i have?

A LUN is a disk. It is normally presented to a system these days via Fiber through a Fiber Channel Controller sometimes called an HBA.

Well, kind of.  As far as the HP-UX OS is concerned, that is basically correct.

You use them because you have to.  When you have a large disk array you carve the array into chunks that are visible to one or more systems.  Each chunk is a LUN.  Each server that can access the disk array can access the LUNs.

The server itself sees the LUN as "a disk".
