My /etc/resolv file reads as follows:
search brunsco
nameserver 10.0.0.2
nameserver 10.0.0.3
The Hosts line of /etc/nsswitch.conf reads:
Hosts: file dns
I can ping internet URLs with no problem. I can also connect via FTP with no problem.
In Netscape, I can connect only if I type in the ip address, but not by URL.
I have tried setting the values of SOCKS_NS and MOZILLA_NO_ASYNC_DNS in the environment with no effect.
I have seen Similar questions on the ITRC and elsewhere on the internet where the response has been "check the proxy settings in Netscape by clicking on Edit...Preferences...Advanced...Proxy. However there is no menu item for Proxy (or Proxies) under Edit...Preferences...Advanced or anywhere else that I can find. Any suggestions?
Solved! Go to Solution.

SolutionThere is no problem with your connection as you are able to ping, and connect via the IP address.
Change the entry in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file to read as
hosts: dns file
This is just a IP to name translation issue.
Also, any netscape client will have Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Proxies and then you type in the details on the right hand side.

Anil

Re: Netscape 4.75 will not resolve URL
By the way though, The Netscape client does NOT have Edit..Preferences..Advanced..Proxies.
I have no idea why it doesn't. We aren't using a proxy server so luckily it doesn't matter.

Re: Netscape 4.75 will not resolve URL
As far as proxy editing is concerned, once you've clicked on Edit and Preferences, you need to click on the little arrow just to the left of the word "Advance". This will expand the list of advanced items and you should see "Cache" and "Proxies".

Re: Netscape 4.75 will not resolve URL
You are absolutely right! Shows you how little I am used to using Netscape. I didn't realize those little arrows did anything. Well, live and learn.

I thought maybe that was it - it's kind of Windoze-like in it's obtuse-ness.
