NIS Slave Server

I am preparing to replace an old Hp server. This is the NIS master.
I have a swing box that is a sun machine that I want to make as the NIS slave .

I have made the SUN machine a NIS client. Then type the command to make it a slave. When I type in the ypstop then ypstart, I get the following error:
"ypservmakedbm: couldn't open /var/yp/bedrock/passwd.byname dbm file ypbind done"

Our NIS domain is bedrock. Anyone have further info about this error?

Re: NIS Slave Server

well honestly , I looked int to the error and couldn't find a 100% match but I did find some indications that makedbm could react badly if the passwd.byname or byuid was built from a format that wasn't 100% ok , I've seen something similar only once and that was with a customer who had tried to do a YPMAKE on a passwd file for which he had made alterations manually in the passwd.byuid file (changed lines , left things out) , the error seems to suggest the problem resides with or within the passwd.byname file itself , you are not sure wether thew error point to the server file not being readable or if the cleitn just cannot create the file locally so if I where you i'd check first if the client machine gets a good reply on a ypcat of the passwd.byname file from the other side and if so if the file is copied at all form the server machine and what the permision are that it is created with on the new slave machine , this might get us further .. as a sidequestion , tyrying to run the same command on a hp-ux cleint do you get the same error ??? if so the problem lies on the server otherwise it could be HP/SUN interaction problems ....

Re: NIS Slave Server

On the nis server in SAM you can assign another machine the role of nis slave.
My systems are 100% Murphy Compliant. Guaranteed!!!
