I paid on month salary work base quntity hours
in month plus if needed work more in the
end the salary the same every month.

Over here all heavy manufacturing is crashing & burning
Labour-intensive support jobs are going overseas [banking, insurance, I.T.]
Full-time retail workers are being re-employed as part-time
[avoids having to pay staff National Insurance & other benefits]

A transition to a new style of work/leisure is in chain & no one knows what the end result will be

A simple example:
What's going to happen to happen to the 100,000's of people who earn a living working at checkouts?
[Radio tags means no tills & hence no operators]

Somehow we have to ride the storm out
I think we'll have to go real high tech
Space, Nanotech, GM, A.I.

There's gonna be a lot of people surplus to requirements......

Your options?

Our system si quite odd...

I'm kinda teacher you know, in a technical institute.

We are paid on 'facial' hour basis, that is to say time spent in front of people, teaching. That's the easy part.

Then some lessons are considered as easy, some tricky. They then have a coefficient applied, which takes into consideration time spent to prepare courses...

The money got for 1 hour lessons depends on this coefficient.

Now what about crashes ? Well, if they are supposed to be caused by our pupils, that's free time for me to make it work. It's considered as post-preparation (I never understood how 'post' something could be 'pre'-itself).

So the issue is to negociate that the crash comes from other cause (hardware, anybody else's fault). Then the stuff belongs to the department manager, who's supposed to handle it... for free (prehistoric, I know), as things are supposed here to work by themselves.

Now comes time to negociate : his time is short, so are his knowledges to fix (he's administrative guy, not tech), so he asks for help, and comes the 'help you help me' logic, with advantages going for a free coffe at the machine, to a day off...

I'm glad to see that there are real policies here, I'll keep this thread to show our staff that some people think about crashes !

Pete, methinks you fail to see the crass political manipulation of the Bush administration. It really matters not what rules/regs the Dept. of Labor passes; these changes will be struck down in 5 minutes by the courts.

They do this in the years leading up to the election to curry favor with big business--they can say "Well, we tried to save some money for you business guys--sorry it didn't work out" while fully expecting that the new rulings won't stand.

We're just seeing standard political posturing at this point in the election cycle. What really matters is what the courts let stand, not what rules the administration makes.

The Silly Season(tm) officially starts in 12 months, this is just one of many preliminary bouts. There will be many more before its all over. I only feel sorry for our international correspondants who really are confused by our political processes: this will be my 6th Presidential election and it still confuses me.

July 3, everyone here gets sent home. One manager has to stay here until the bitter end.

Everyone else in IT gets to go home at 3 p.m.

The stuckee manager got out her wand from Hogwarts and waved it at me this morning.

Now she's not the stuckee, I am.

Plus, I have three hours of database maintenance to do this weekend.

I have a good mind to call the building manager and get the locks changed on her door.

Once again, the short end of the stick for the systems administrator. Any extra pay? Thank you? Nope, I'm just taking advantage and pushing an Ignite image through the network. Nobody's here so they won't notice the bandwidth.

Ratz, got here too late, that's what I get for taking a vacation day to extend the weekend.

I really liked Chris???s input on the Fair labor act.

I started my current job knowing it would be rough, but not this rough. I applied to be a VB programmer, and was offered a Unix Admin/Operations job. I was supposed to be a Jr. System Admin/Operations Manager. The Sr. Admin/Sr. Operations Manger quit 3 weeks after I got here and dumped me with a big data center and employees. I had never managed people in 24/7 capacity, especially people that were 3 - 4 generations older than I was (Not trying to offend anyone, just explaining the difficulty). The data center was a wreck, and so were all the systems. Orange Shag carpeted raised floor tiles, T-500???s running tweaked out versions of HPUX 9.04 that had applications such as Novell 3.0 for HPUX, and other nightmare apps. They told me something on the lines of sink or swim!!! I was fresh out of college, and the only real *NIX experience I had was on machines I umm??? accidentally wondered onto in my more curious days. Of course I played on Linux machines, but as all of you know it???s night and day. I must have worked more hours in the first six months of my employment here than in the last year. I don???t think there wasn???t a day I didn???t work at least 16 hours. We had ???Poll Select??? lines with some strange conversion tool to convert to TCP/IP that would die constantly, Scheduler apps that would die all the time, Cobol programmers and Apps that would go rouge (yes both the apps and the programmers) J UGH!!! We had an ancient UPS that would regularly go down, as well as massive air condition issues, which would cause a whole range of other issues. Needless to say I swam, but I didn???t see a penny for those hours. Eventually they made me the Sr. Operations Manger, which came with a pay raise, however, I still don???t see any extra pennies for the extra hours. I learned the secret to eliminating many of the issues the hard way. Have redundant EVERYTHING!!! Hahaha UPS, AIR, disks, (Use Hot Spares), power supplies, get a SAN if you can, have a rock solid DRM plan and a good budget for new media and offsite storage, and train the hell out of your staff. Oh, and delegate so your not the loan ranger.
