Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi Dan,

I believe the new thread:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=658079

was actually meant to be the final posting of this thread:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=657783

I don't know if you can concatenate one thread into the other and close the new one or not, but just thought I'd ask.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi Dan,

I posted a question in the June/July forums issues thread but didn't get a response. Here was my question:
_____________________________

I need the advice of a moderator, so I figured this would be a good place to post a question. I'm new to the forums (1 week), so I apologize if this topic has been covered before.

In a recent thread a customer asked about obtaining an unsupported HP utility that doesn't ship with our systems. I was reluctant to post the tool to the ITRC as all the internal documentation stated the need to get this tool from an HP Support person (although this could just be the author's way of saying you need to be inside HP's firewalls to access the tool). I ended up emailing the tool to the customer directly rather than posting it publicly. I figured that just saved him the hassle of opening a support call.

In any case, what is the policy of the ITRC forums regarding posting of documented, yet unsupported, tools? Was I being overly cautious by not posting the tool?

Thanks for any advice,

Dave

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Lots of untested unproven tools get posted to itrc every day. HP covers itself legally with the terms of use for the site. For a newbie, thats interesting reading and I recommend it.

My concern when posting my stuff is possbily damaging someone elses system. That seems to be covered under the terms of use also, but I have a conscience.

Your very issue came up a year ago. I have a version of crack for cracking password files that hp ported to hpux and works great. I use it to test security on a non-production system and then email the user telling them their password wasn't complex enough and to start following policy. I got a copy in security class.

Someone asked me to post it. I did not. I felt it would be irresponsible to make crack that easy to find and was concerned someone would run it against /etc/passwd on a production system. The person asking was unhappy, but I can sleep at night.

If its really dangerous, go with your gut. If its really harmless, try and help the guy out. Thats my policy.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan, this isn't a forum issue, just ITRC in general. I tried to use the feedback form, but it says it's unavailable. Can you pass this on to the right people?

I'd like the call summary screen redesigned to be more readable. Attached is a sample of what I think would be more readable.

Network performance the last half hour seems to be about 200 Baud. ;-)

Just thought you'd like to know it took 7 minutes to get a reply window open. Seems to effect everyone because my reply was still first.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Issues driving me crazy for a long time:

4) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

5) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we
don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the
same links to the notification pages.

6) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

Give us some FORMATTING!!! Look at phpbb and see how they implement bbcode if you don't want to allow html.

Lately the search results show double and are sorted so that the double posts aren't even together.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dave, go with what SEP suggests...that's how things have been handled in the past.

SEP, thanks for helping out Dave. Checking on any perf. issues on our end.

Michael, post removed, thanks.

Sean, I've passed along your suggestion and have let them know about the unavailable status. Also, thanks for the suggestions to improve the forums...the name in the reply window, links on the notification pages are being implemented in next release.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Brainstorm Today, guess its from the extra sleep.

I was wondering if a web based itrc only email system would be useful.

It would work like yahoo mail except it would be limited on send and receive to hp's internal email system and a new one. sep@forums.itrc.hp.com

Such an idea might facilitate communication that should not be done in a forum thread.

I'm not sure HP would want to do it, and I'm sure others might figure out a downside or two, or three.

Consider this a trial balloon.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Steven - it's a good idea and please note this is not the official HP reply, but the first thing that springs to mind is spam, spam, spam.

It would take some mighty filtering and think about the load email would put on the server. I don't want to go there.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Steven, cheryl:

Since we have to "log in" to the ITRC, could this just be a inter-forum communication?
When you log in, you could have a link that goes to a "personal thread" where folkz could post a question to you.
If you wanted to filter it even further, only offer it to members who have hats.

I know I have in the past been looking at a question someone has and thinking to myself... "self... , you know who could answer this problem in his/her sleep, but only if you could get him/her to look at the thread"

well... that's my 3 cents (50% for taxes)
Enjoy!

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Cheryl,

The concept as jelled will permit inbound mail from two domains:

hp.com (and other internals they designate)
forums.itrc.hp.com

None other. No inbound spam.

Limiting outbound to the same domains will prevent misuse of the service.

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Dan:

I have seen a few of these kind of questions pop up in diferent threads;
where the requester was wondering why they do not get notifications...

Is there a fix that I / we can point them to or tell them how to fix it... or is this one still in the works?

I have not experienced this myself, so I am sure it is a selective error...
Enjoy!

Procura, once again thanks for the great information on Opera.

Dave/John/SEP, the dupes have been dealt with, thanks.

John, the fix for the notifications issue is being release next week. Hopefully, all will go well and notifications will kick back on.

Thanks,

Re: Please post your forums issues - August 2004

Hi Dan,

If such a system were implemented, it should definitely be an opt-in system. I browse the forums and post as I have time.

I don't want a system where anyone can send me a message anytime. If I received a message, I would feel obligated to answer in a timely fashion, which has the potential to take away from the job that actually pays the bills.

I can see a use for some form of communication between forums members, but it needs to be well thought out so that, if we choose to participate in it, we are not inundated with messages.

Seems like an HP-UX or Omniback post.

If you could edit out the line I put about You being Linux, me being HP-UX it would get you a beer next time we meet.
