Printing to IBM Printer

I will add more information to this as soon as I have more facts but I wanted to start this because it might be a generic enough question that someone will have an answer before I have all the particulars.

I have been asked to help troubleshoot a printing problem. The print queue is set up on an HP 9000 running HP-UX. I will verify this but I think the version of HP-UX is either 10.2 or 11.0. The queue is only used for an application to print to this printer. Users can also print to this printer but they do it through a windows print queue on a separate server. The physical printer used to be an HP printer and it worked fine. They recently changed the printer out for an IBM printer and now the print outs are unreadable. It has been suggested that the queue is sending HP print codes and that needs to be changed to IBM print codes. I haven't done any HP-UX admin in a few years and I never did a lot with print queues so I'm not sure how to change that.

I realize I need to look at this closer and get more information, but if you have any suggestins to get me heading in the correct direction, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Re: Printing to IBM Printer

Shalom,

Since HP makes the OS and the printers, Many but not all HP printers have HP-UX drivers for them. Hard to find but they can be found.

IBM could care less about supporting the OS on their printers and generally does not.

If printing works through a windows print queue then that is how it should be done.

You need to give us the model number of the printer if you want specifics on whether a driver exists or can be compiled for a particular IBM printer.

If windows servers exist, there are problably windows drivers for the printers and this is a path of less resistance than using a crowbar on an unsupported HP-UX system(Both versions of the OS are long out of support).

Re: Printing to IBM Printer

you can either set it up as a remote printer using a windows server, or it *might* be possible to get this working.

having the model names / numbers of both the old and new printers whould be helpful in the second case.

Re: Printing to IBM Printer

Not sure if this applies in your case. But a while back folks here thought to outsource their printing. I "believe" they sent it to place who printed on large IBM printer. [Cause that was an IBM shop...]

To accomplish this all the HPUX printjobs had to be converted to EBCDIC. But they decided to go that route and were able to print.

Then, like all manager, they realized it was better for them to get some big Xerox printers in-house, put back the printjobs to stop converting to EBCDIC and print locally.

Gotta love how managment claims to save money...

Hope this helps,
Rgrds,
Rita

A note of caution, not all characters give a clean conversion to EBCDIC.
