Its their fault, if it doesn't work. Steve takes no responsibility for what you do to your system with this utility. None at all. If you screw up your system and expect me to fix it, that will cost you $150 an hour, plus expenses. That's $100 an hour cheaper than HP.

This is a serious tool for serious system's administrators. I don't run it on prod systems, I copy my passwd file onto a test box.

User of this code beware.

To make it work, replace the Makefile in /usr/local/crack with the one I've attached.

Worse than that, this made one of my older test systems unstable.

DON'T run it on a production box. At least I don't have to link to my own server.

I did bring the crack issue to the attention of my instructor in Security Class and HP support. It was also discussed in a different thread in the Linux forum.

I clicked on your link, saved the make file, and checked against one I downloaded earlier and found it matched. The Makefile I posted gets you through the makedict process.

If I indicated that the makefile was posted ealier in this thread, that was probably a misfiring neuron in my pea brain molecules.

Due to mistakenly mentioning the name of an HP engineer, I did ask Dan to zap his name. As far as I know there were no other changes in the thread.

Bottom Line: I did try the link, and the makefile and it exploded. Where I got it, is a good questions.

I'm surpprised that the crack utiliy worked fine and gussed the passwds without using your modified makeonly file.
Perhaps, because I've downloaded and installed the gcc 3.2. I think the problem with you was the version of the gcc 2.2.
./Crack -makeonly
./Crack -makedict
./Crack /etc/passwd

succeffuly.
